Regional armies on alert as Libya crisis deepens [Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Algeria]

Army chiefs from Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Algeria are on alert as the crisis in nearby Libya deteriorates, placing the entire region at risk, a military source said on Saturday.

Speaking after a meeting Friday between the four army heads, a Malian officer who attended said: "The situation in Libya is of great concern. There is a risk of destabilising the entire region."

The meeting was to reinforce the fight against insecurity in a region threatened by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

"Moreover, because of the Libyan crisis, the security situation in the Sahel has deteriorated, so it is necessary to be careful. We are all on alert and we keep each other informed," he added.

According to a document from one of the participating countries, seen by AFP, "there is now no doubt, several Al-Qaeda fighters are involved in the Libya fighting."

These included "Libyan Islamists who were released by the government a few weeks before the outbreak of the conflict" in mid-February.

The document adds that among the insurgents fighting Moamer Kadhafi's regime are Libyan combatants from Afghanistan and those who had fought for AQIM in the Sahel.

It urged Sahel countries not to allow weapons from Libya to fall into the hands of "terrorists in the Sahel" and strengthen the Al-Qaeda army.

In late March, Mali and Niger security sources said AQIM had taken advantage of the Libyan conflict to accumulate heavy weapons, such as anti-aircraft missiles, described as "a real danger for the whole area."

Algeria's army chief of staff Ahmed Gaïd Salah, told Algerian press agency APS, that no Sahel country could work alone, as stability in the sub-region was closely linked to regional co-operation.

Russia: No ground operation in Libya without UN approval
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4062586,00.html

Russia is ready to discuss a potential ground operation in Libya, but only within the context of the UN Security Council, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday.

“I go on the principle that the ground operation has not been authorised by the UN Security Council. If someone wants to call for such a mandate, then be my guest, come to the UN Security Council and we’ll discuss it,” Lavrov said in an interview on the TVTs Russian television channel. (AFP)

I am surprised at the strategic stupidity obvious on many FR threads about Kadaffi. Kadaffi has stopped the Muslim Brotherhood, and the world wide caliphate movement DEAD IN ITS TRACKS,single handedly, and people are saying they want Qadaffi dead?

I am rooting for Qadaffi, and do not buy Obamas take on the democracy movement spin for one second . Since when was Sharia Law democracy?

Kadaffi wins, the price of oil will go down, and if he loses, the sky is the limit. Kadaffi is interfering with the Obama ascendencey plan, when Obama in the summer of 2012 is planning to declare himself the compassionate leader and representative of the World Wide Caliphate in the West.Obama is a fascist. Few get it.I admire Kadaffi for standing firm on his Bedouin tribal ground and spitting in Obama’s face. All of sub Saharan Africa feels the same way as this thread article indicates.

Our forces have no business being in Libya promoting the conquest of that nation by the Muslim Brotherhood and the World Wide Caliphate, now supposedly under the agitpropaganda guise of a democracy movement? Who in all hell do y’all think we been fighting for the last ten years in Iraq and in Afghanistan, and all that changes in one month because that fool in the White Hut says so?What a laugh!

I hope Kadaffi wins big time.He has allies feeding him soldiers and support from a good many nations in Africa and I hope he wins big time. Obama reveals his true intent NOW, he could not bring Africa into Muslim dominance through working with Odinga in Kenya in 2006/2007. Now he wants the whole continent of Africa to fall to the World Wide Caliphate?

Eff Obama and the camel he rode in on.GET OUR FORCES OUT OF LIBYA!

Many of us are old enough to remember when Qadaffi had 189 Americans blown up back in 1988 or in 1986 when he targeted a club in Berlin frequented by American soldiers and only by the grace of God did we lose just a few.

Just because those were before your time, don't think you have the market on what is the correct opinion about Qadaffi.

Yes, that is true about Lockerbie, but the fact is that since 2002, Quadaffi and Mubarak were noth staunch Western Allies in the war on Terror as secular Muslim nations, who wanted nothing to do with taking Medina and Mecca away from the Saudis.

Now Obama's about face to support the very Islamofascists we have been fighting since 2002 happens like a hat trick and all you can pull out of the hat is a very true Lockerbie incident in which innocents died? What about the thousands of US soldiers who sacrificed their lives for a cause now being abandoned by the slick trickster and master of shuck and jive in the White Hut?

Obama worked to make Kenya fall to Odinga's Orange party Islamofascists in 2006 and 2007 by election campaigning for the same movement his present Libyan policy supports. Now Obama wants all of Africa to fall to the Muslim Brotherhood, not just Kenya. The dots are being commected despite all of this fake talk about a Sharia based "democracy" movement. Sharia based society can never be democratic. Africa does not want it.Obama wants it in order to subdue the West and its economic and military prominance by cutting off oil. He has said so publicly in his speech in Alexandria in 2009, where the Muslim Brotherhood were his specifically invited guests. Obama has Muslim brotherhood advisors right on his White House staff[ source: ex-CIA Agent Reveals: “Muslim Brotherhood” has infiltrated Obama Administration http://notalemming.wordpress.com/2011/02/03/ex-cia-agent-reveals-muslim-brotherhood-has-infiltrated-obama-administration/]

Sub Saharan Africa supports Kadaffi, they do not want Al Qaeda invading their mosques.NATO needs to get itself back across the Med where it belongs. And our military needs to haul a$$ out of the Libya theater.

Lockerbie was not before my time, and I was there in 2005 and met some of the fine Lockerbie Scottish women who laundered the clothes of the victims which had been strewn across the fields of Dumfriess-shire and they later laid them out for mourning relatives to collect. But none of that justfies falling for the Obama Libya grift and support of the World Wide Caliphate.

Pardon my skepticism. But what kind of catnip are you and others ON who think that Obama's Libya action is even remotely justfiable? The UN ,whose resolution gives Obama and NATO cover, is largely controlled by the World Wide Caliphate Movement who say that Kadaffi is violating humanitarian law by fighting the Muslim Brotherhood? What a laugh, that coming from those who support genocide against Israel.

Pardon me for reversing your metaphor but; you hit that right on the nose. I’m plenty old enough to remember Lockerbie myself and that just doesn’t cut it as an excuse after all these years.
