100 years ago over half of the workforce was engaged in agriculture, now it’s less than 1%.

How many hours a week will these new hires be able to work? After all the publicity over this settles down, how many will be laid off? Will McD’s have to raise their prices to accommodate for these new hires and if so how many customers will opt for the competition’s dollar burger?

This was all a publicity stunt that will soon backfire on McD’s.

Do you see ROBO-Mac Servers in the future?

At least the ROBO-Mac Servers will actually speak English.

The author blames ultra-high regulation and government spending for keeping job creation down and the promise of higher taxes is tamping down private investment - again killing job creation. It’s hard to argue with the thesis and basic economics.

It's also hard to see a solution, since the only one involves going to politically entrenched interests and speaking the truth that "Jobs will be created when you give up some of your power." As long as those who believe in a command-and-control economy remain ascendant, I expect no significant job growth in the US - just a few spurts here and there in industries that aren't as heavily regulated...yet.

They are probably working on establishing an Apple Technology Czar position right now, complete with mandates for the company to supply ten million free iPads a year to inner-city schools.

RE: At least the ROBO-Mac Servers will actually speak English.

Well, that’s bad news even for burger flippers then.

I had read somewhere (possibly here) that this was so they could dump more of their full-time workers, since part-timers don’t get benefits. By hiring enough part-timers to fill all shifts, they end up saving on benefit and healthcare costs. Also, part-timers get lower salaries, so the net outlay for salary costs probably drops too.

The only way Americans will get burger flipper jobs and other low wage jobs is to boot out millions of illegal aliens which should have been done ages ago.

If you see an Hispanic crew working at McDondalds you won’t get a job there. Or if you do.... you will be knifed because you being hired meant some else’s cousin did not

There was a McDonalds near me that had robotic fry makers and burger makers. It was staffed mostly by handicapped people who really only bagged the stuff, took the money, made change, and cleaned. Not sure if it is still that way as I do not eat there.

I don’t see any reason why the whole process couldn’t be automated, the customer enters his order and the whole order can be done on an assembly line.

I know an engineer who worked for a firm developing those systems. Fast food chains have decided that their potential work force is too stupid, too lazy, and if the government is going to demand that they get a "living wage" with health benefits they are going to hire as few of them as absolutely possible.

Look at the bright side: For the moment, we’re still in a “McJobs” style downturn. Americans will soon look back wistfully on the days when McJobs were plentiful and they could find burger-flipping jobs, or at least that’s our future if Obama stays in office much longer.

Paraphrasing what is going around.

A public employee union member, a CEO and a tea party guy are sitting looking at a dozen jobs opened up in the economy. The CEO grabs 11 jobs and exports them and says to the tea party guy ‘watch out for that union guy, he wants to get ahead of you in the McJob line’.

I did Point-Of-Sale software for restaurants (all the way from fine dining to fast food). Industry study after industry study says people want a PERSON taking care of them.

Otherwise, trust me, it WOULD be all robotic by now, if it could be.

As an aside, a young relative DOES work at McDonalds, and while I'm impressed at the level of automation, (I've had the tour several times), those machines break down a fair amount, so the technology isn't quite there yet anyway.

People want a COMPETENT PERSON taking care of them, not many of those at Fast Food places, certainly not at the wages the restaurants are paying them.

Also what people really want is somebody to bitch to if things go wrong....so you can have just one person there that’s the designated fall guy that people can complain to when things go wrong.

Or you will be able to understand the English that they are speaking to you.
