Keeping the Dream Alive: President Obama's Work with the African American Community
Posted by Michael Blake on April 08, 2011 at 10:30 AM EDT
On Wednesday, April 6th, the National Action Network kicked off its 20th anniversary convention, celebrating "20 years of struggle, 20 years of progress, 20 years of shaping history."
During the day, four Cabinet members--Education Secretary Duncan, Attorney General Holder, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan--spoke to convention attendees about how the Obama Administration has been working with the African American community. That night, President Obama spoke at the Keepers of the Dream Awards Gala.
The President shared how we are building upon a new foundation to ensure that we are winning the future through job creation, access to affordable health care, providing housing assistance, tackling poverty, and focusing on education to be the pathway to our long-term economic prosperity. He spoke words from his heart of how public service can help people: "Yes, we have a ways to go to address unemployment and housing, but if we work together, we can get to another of King's beloved mountaintops and promised lands."
While the night was filled with memorable moments, the one that stuck with me was sitting next to my mom, Hilary Lawrence, a breast cancer survivor who went from no house in Jamaica to helping me work at the White House in D.C. My mom and my loving dad did so much to pave the way for me. To sit there as the Director of African American Outreach and experience this with her was one of those revelation moments where I reflected on the past and am so grateful for the future.
On the same day, we launched a new website--Winning the Future: President Obama and the African American Community. This website will allow for people to better understand how the Obama Administration's policies and work have benefited the African American community, from minority-owned businesses having more access to capital, to the benefits of health reform that are improving the lives of all Americans. We hope you'll find the new site useful!

MSNBC has taken some rather pointed criticism over its upcoming A Stronger America: The Black Agenda special (airing this Sunday at noon EDT), co-hosted by Ed Schultz and Rev. Al Sharpton.
Should have been more accurately called, “Keeping The Plantation Up and Running”.
Interesting..they know they are losing some in the Black community.....so, they are shoring up for the election in 2012.....
UNKO, I am so tired of hearing this crap about the “black community” and their needs. Between them and the fags, I don’t give a whit of concern about their plight. I get up each day and try to figure out how to best care for my family. Perhaps they should all do the same without reaching into my pocket for a handout or for a preference for some job or education. From my perspective, if you don’t like it here, if you think things are stacked against you, go elsewhere. Find out about how merciful one of those African Hell Holes is to someone apart from their “society”. In other words, don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out and don’t bother reapplying for admission.
All The One really needs to do is to get up on front of this audience, tell the young black males to pick up their pants, the young girls to close their legs...and all of them to go to school and study hard.
This ain’t rocket science.
There are very few Blacks that can call themselves “African-American”. Blacks, born in the USA, are Americans, period. Africans that migrate to America are Africans. And.....Africans that become naturalized citizens are then identified as “African-Americans”. It is not acceptable to call “American Blacks” African-Americans when so many Black Americans have died or been wounded in wars & conflicts from the American Revolution forward. Shame on the so-called Black leadership, from failed POTUS Obama on down!!!
What is UNKO?
You Know.
Is the black community better off now because a black man is president?
Have conditions in the ghetto improved for blacks due to Obama being president?
Are feral youth gangs still laying waste to major sections of many cities?
Are critical numbers of minorities still convinced that America is a bigoted racist society, in spite of the powerful symbol of a black man in the highest position in this country? Did the election of Obama prove to anyone that the barriers which once existed are now gone???
NOT Included in the ‘Keepers of the Dream’ Event:
1) Thomas Sowell
2) Walter Williams
3) Herman Cain
4) Allen West
5) Reverend Manning
Oh this is fascinating. Everything I’ve read tells me that our black brothers and sisters and those on the lower end of the economic scale are getting it in the neck under Obama.
Did he fill up their tanks and pay off their mortgages like that lady said? Can these these happy-happy, joy-joy celebrations of the Great “O” and these claims of wonderful accomplishments really convince blacks that the country’s not going down the crapper? That their lives are not being blighted by joblessness, inflation, fleeing businesses, rising taxes and so on? I guess we’ll find out next year.
Brazen shamelessness, smiles and glib lying can only get you so far.
Winning the Future = WTF
got that right
The poorest people in America are those who live on politician’s promises.
I wish people like Bill O’Reilly would not have elevated this thug to the level he is now. For Obama to be doing something with him is a good sign for us on thr right, but it would be better if Rev Al hadn’t been somewhat mainstreamed by people at Fox News...
That is my dream, too! That he goes back to being a community organization for his African brethern, and leave the presidency to a grown up.
Thanks Libloather. Saw the Schultz piece ad while at the bank Thursday.

The way Fox puts Sharpton on, in it’s most mainstream of programs, is an abomination! Sharpton is a carnival side show at best. I doubt whether even Greg Gutfeld would allow him on to Red Eye.
Yet O’Reilly, Cavuto, Hannity and everyone else at Fox sit there and talk to the guy like he’s in his right mind! Unbelievable.
Yeh a dream is all they will ever get out of Barry, Al and Jesse. Keep on dreamin.
