I Am A Federal Employee
FedSmith.com ^ | April 6, 2011 | Kelly Arsenault

As we draw closer to a government shutdown, I have been reading with great interest. You see, I am a federal employee employed at Fort Drum as a civilian mail clerk. I am looking at the possibility of a furlough for as long as it takes for Congress to reach an agreement. It could be days or it could be weeks, but regardless of how long, I am more concerned at how much. How much will this affect my family? How much will it hurt us financially? The uncertainty is maddening as I, and my fellow federal workers, watch the stage show that is called Washington Politics gamble with our way of making a living.

"Mail clerk"

What in the Hell is that? I vaguely recall that in the early part of my career many moons ago. Maybe she is an Exchange Server Administrator? Or network guru? Other than that, I have no idea what "mail clerk" might be.

Maybe she can get promoted to Assistant Deputy Buggy Whip Inspector when she returns to work.

Ahhhh, I see now. You say to scroll down to find the link to the article. It is not there. One has to click on the ‘Headline Archives’ link, and then scroll down some more to find the actual link to here...

You obviously didnt want to discuss the actual article or else you wouldnt have played games with the link. I suppose I will read it anyhow since I had to go to all of the trouble to do your job for you...

I worked in the Federal government and I know that government employees have zero experience with risk and uncertainity. So they tend to totaly freak out over any hint of a reorganization, etc.

Last time, the employees got all their money and that will happen again. However, Obama is a radical wild card. He and the Unions could be planning to get Federal employees out in the streets beating their chests and threatening Republicans. Obama would not hesitate to harm Federal employees for the cause of his power. He had the chance to rescue service members’ families and he refused.

Hopefully they have some emergency savings money to get through a few weeks.

“Mail clerk” What in the Hell is that? Ever been to a Post Office? All federal mail coming onto a Post or Base or Federal agency is received, inspected, sorted, then delivered to mailboxes in the mail room for those who live in the dorms, all official administrative mail and packages to on Post or Base organizations. Oh and the inspections are for everything from a little white powder to drugs to explosives. It’s probably much more complicated than that, so Mr.or Mrs. Federal employee; I want to thank you for your service.

After reading this article, I wanted to puke.
You see, I am a tax payer in the private sector. I have no idea what job security feels like. I don’t know when I’ll be able to retire. I am pretty sure I’ll never see a penny of Social Security. I pray to God my employer continues to prosper so that I have work. So, public employees, cry me a river. Man up like the rest of have.

ever heard of a savings account? I run a small organization within the DoD, mixed military, Army civilians, a few contractors. As people come on board, I recommend to each they put enough into savings to tide them over for at least three months as an emergency fund. All of my people have done so.

I’m a federal employee and I say shut it down. I would rather eat beans for a month or two than continue down this path.

Concur, shut it down; I've already instructed my military on what they need to do to keep things going. My greatest concern is that the longer this drags on, the greater the risk to the Soldiers we're supporting in the field.

This Postal Worker is undoubtedly complaining because other Federal workers get a better deal. The main complaint of public sector drones is that the drones the next county over has a better deal. It could be they make $500 more a year and have two more sick days. Whatever it is, this will be brought up next time their sweet heart labor contract is up for renegotiation

A federal employee should be comfortable enough financially to have a little rainy-day/emergency fund set aside. They will get paid, and the lump-sum will be delightful to receive, I’m sure, but for now, they have to pull some weight too, and suffer along with the rest of us in order to achieve the end goal of getting the government to stop spending. As a business owner, I’ve had times when I delayed paying myself and the world didn’t end.

“As a business owner, I’ve had times when I delayed paying myself and the world didn’t end.”

My husband was a small business owner for many years but it just couldn’t survive this downturn. During the course of its lifetime there were many ups and downs and times where he couldn’t bring home a paycheck in order to cover other expenses. Like taxes. That always, ALWAYS were paid.

You really are clueless. Free Republic doesn’t allow direct links in the Posting menu to articles from the Huffington Post.

First of all, I'm retired. No job needed, thank you.
But I feel for this young worker.

Second, if you can spell “rein in” (your spending), thank a public servant, aka a teacher. Otherwise, get spell check for your next job application and meanwhile, go back to school and broaden your education.

If the govt jobs (in this case Army civilian) are so plush, go for it. What's stopping you? Or perhaps your idea of a “real job” is “Will that be for here, or to go?” or waving a red flag at road construction? Or maybe manufacturing equipment or developing and testing software a US govt clerk will buy and a US govt employees will use and maintain.

What is a “real job” in yr view?
We cannot all be brain surgeons.

Don't “waah” me about the private sector and how "the govt" screwed up the "corporations. Like GE? Like Boeing? Like Microsoft? Like the airlines? Like all the banks etc that have FDIC guarantees? Like all those that took TARP? What "corporation" got screwed up by the government? Lots of folks are middle class or better because of the govt, and selling stuff to the govt, and using skills and contacts they gained from being in the military, and using money they borrowed thanks to govt guaranteed loans, and building their businesses with help of educated employees who were trained by the govt, and living with technological innovations that were developed by or for the govt or with the help of govt loans, grants etc, and living with govt safety standards. Fly much?

Before 2007 this did not seem to cause this anger, so let's go back to 2007 spending and lets be fair to people whose jobs are not needed and move them, or let them go with notice. Not this.

Meanwhile, sheesh. A military mail clerk worries about not getting paid and you call her a government teat sucker and worse? Maybe you've never been deployed and worried about how your mail was gonna catch up

If you think you can do her job cheaper - ENLIST. When the Army loses civilians, enlistees will be sorting the mail.
What do you think it costs the Army for each person it enlists to sort mail for a 2-3-4 yr hitch? Salary, benefits, housing, family support, medical yada yada yada
