Media Matters Definition of ‘Misinformation’: Icky Old Opinions
Big Journalism ^ | 4/2/11 | Lori Ziganto

Posted on 04/02/2011 11:37:35 PM PDT by Nachum

Evidently, the newspeak definition of ‘misinformation’ is actually ‘opinions with which I don’t agree’. According to Media Matters for America that is, as The Right Sphere points out. They use an example given in Howard Kurtz’s article “Partisan Organizations Use Sound Bite Warfare” wherein Kurtz describes the “bat signal” given out by MMFA. This coordinated attack sprung from Governor Mike Huckabee making a remark on a radio show about Natalie Portman’s pregnancy and how he thought she was “boasting” about unwed motherhood:

Media Matters mission, and what presumably allows them the tax exempt 501(c)(3) status, is as follows:

Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.

Do you see the problem yet? No? They’re allowed tax exempt status because they claim to be an educational organization dedicated to correcting conservative misinformation. Now go back and read what Huckabee said. Where’s the misinformation? Since when is a person’s personal opinion “misinformation”? Huckabee didn’t make any declaration of fact. He wasn’t promoting a falsehood. He was simply expressing his opinion on Natalie Portman’s pregnancy. You can disagree or agree with Huckabee, but he wasn’t lying about anything. It was just a controversial statement which, as Kurtz pointed out, no one noticed for three days.

Huh. I’m no tax policy expert nor do I even have vast experience as a community organizer from which to draw, but it seems to me as if their whole tax exempt deal is baloney. They aren’t ‘correcting misinformation.’ They are trying to smear people for having opinions that they think are icky.

Eric Boehlert should rename himself Senior Fellow of Malicious “Othering.”

"Time to follow the Media Matters money trail."

I think it's been well documented that it leads straight to Soros.

Time to go after Soros’s money. Not sure how but without money, he is just another raving lunatic with delusions of a socialist Utopia. With money, he is a dangerous raving lunatic with delusions of a socialist Utopia.

I agree that Media Matters exaggerates the flaws of conservatives and shamefully labels debatable opinions as “falsehoods” and “misinformation.”

But let’s be careful when we complain about its tax exemption. There are an awful lot of wonderful conservative organizations with tax exemptions. Once we open this can of worms, do we really want liberal bureaucrats and the IRS going on a witch hunt of conservative organizations?

Maybe they should all lose their tax exemptions and we should be paying a non-loophole flat tax. Then the people can fund these alleged "think" tanks with real dollars and see who sinks and who floats in the sea of ideas.

Sounds good, in theory. I’m all for a flat tax, particularly getting rid of tax loopholes for business and mortgages. But getting rid of tax exemptions for all “public interest groups” and charities, including churches, would be politically impossible.

It seems that cutting any more than $33B out of $1.4Trillion deficit is also politically impossible, so I believe you.

I am not talking about tax exempt status and the IRS. I mean affect his businesses, the source of wealth. Collapse his wealth to the point his is harmless.

I don’t think it is all Soros money though. I believe the rabbit hole goes deeper.

Yeah there's prolly other leftist orgs funding them like the Tides Foundation but per Glenn Beck it's mostly Soros money.

And now MM has 87 *researchers* devoted solely working on ('targeting') Glenn Beck and *correcting* any of his 'lies'.

No doubt. It's just that "Soros" is the one name you need metion to tell anyone all they need to know about an organization. A convenient time-saver.

I also think that Soros is a distraction. We need to be looking at the individuals pocketing his cash illegally. The Democrat, socialist, communist, big union, minority, University-hack, terrorist loving and gay-agenda operatives that have left other cushy political gigs to find a home at Media Traitors. It is way too convenient to only say “Soros”. It smells. The stink comes from deep within our nation’s leftist cults and war mongering money grubbers outside our borders. Soros wasn’t the only one congealing this pile of evil inside our country into the the massive deadly infection it has become.
