Workers evacuated as radiation soars at Japan reactor (Fukushima Dai-Ichi)

OSAKA (AFP) - Extremely high levels of radiation were detected in water leaking from reactor two of the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, forcing the evacuation of workers, its operator said Sunday.

A spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) said the level of radiation found in the leaked water in the turbine room was 10 million times higher than it should be for water inside the reactor, indicating damage to the fuel rods.

"We detected 1,000 millisieverts per hour of radiation in a puddle of water at the reactor number two. This figure is 10 million times higher than water usually kept in a reactor," the spokesman said.

"We are examining the cause of this, but no work is being done there because of the high level of radiation.

They better figure a material to mix in the coolant like stop leak for a automobile radiator.

The NewsNow site at UK has updates from many sources

Sorry for my inadequate explanation about navigation.

How many items have read over the years about Japanese dancing robots, robotic girlfriends, robot dogs, etc?

For sure. Now is not the time for adherence to procedure. Now is the time for creative response.

I’ve been wondering about the comparison of this disaster with Chernobyl. You would have to think that Chernobyl was much worse, since it blew a significant portion of its core straight up into the air. But is this a “death by a thousand cuts” ?

5-6 hours in the water, and you’re dead.

Yeah, with the highly elevated levels of radiation in the seawater outside of the plant, it seems that this highly radioactive coolant is getting into the ground and leaking out to sea.

This is what conflicts me. While this obviously isn’t quite on the level of Chernobyl, this is definitely worse than TMI. No need for doomsaying, but I also get sick of the “nothing to see here, move along” crowd (I really got a kick out of Ann “Radiation Is Good For You” Coulter. I don’t see her booking a flight to Japan). I think we can rationally say that this is a dangerous situation without getting into the panic-mongering realm (like that ridiculous map showing 750 rads on the West Coast of the US).

To give an idea of how bad this is, the total doee that anyone is permitted to get in A YEAR is 250 to 1000 MiS, and that is only when working save lives in a nuclear emergency... and they are now getting 1000 PER HOUR!

This is WAY out of control.

Yeah, way worse than TMI, although the initial scenarios were very similar. I recall seeing a news item saying that it was not yet as bad as TMI, which flabbergasted me. TMI was almost totally contained. Fukushima blew past that with that first Hydrogen explosion, not to mention that second geyser eruption, whatever that was.

They must stop the leaks to maintain some cooling and put a end to this thing.

They almost have it,would be a shame to lose it now over leakage.

hey look... an actual number!

"We detected 1,000 millisieverts per hour of radiation in a puddle of water at the reactor number two. This figure is 10 million times higher than water usually kept in a reactor," the spokesman said."

ok... this would be 1 Sv AT THE REACTOR. anywhere in particular? like inside? you people do realize they were spraying water on the reactor to cool it. the water has to go somewhere... and that's usually... a puddle.

next, 10 MILLION times (cue dr evil) 'normal' levels. that would mean 'normal levels' would be 0.1 MICRO SV at the reactor. that seems off considering we get 500 uSv/hr from the old TV sets ( link )

i seriously think people are mystified by those magical things called numbers.

No way, really?

Do you think the puddle of water from that which was sprayed on the reactor vessel would be at 1 Sv if containment was completely intact? I'm obviously not a nuke engineer, but that doesn't seem likely. That certainly suggests a breach to me. But then again, numbers is hard and I are kinda stoopid...

That cost money and looks like these guys cut every possible corner possible http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2695299/posts . Bury the freaking plant already, under a mountain of concrete, right after you throw the managers in.

I seriously think people are mystified by those magical things called numbers.

Douglas Hofstadter ( no doubt a lefty ) coined the term, innumeracy, in his short lived SciAm column Metamagical Themas. At the link you'll see the original article where he describes a college class which he asked to estimate the height of the Empire State building, with no one coming within a factor of 2 of the actual height, something that's always stuck with me. ( Even if memory is becoming obsolete! )

**** Bury the freaking plant already, under a mountain of concrete, right after you throw the managers in. ****

I’ll chime in here:

1. What are the substrates in which there plants are built should they be “Chernobyl-ed” (buried)?

2. What tolerances,..... upon shutdown burial, are they able to withstand if another seismic event take place?

3. What of the disposal of sprayed seawater?
