WASHINGTON, March 25, 2011 Afghan and coalition forces killed two armed militants and detained numerous suspected insurgents, including a Taliban leader, today in the Daman district of Afghanistans Kandahar province, military officials reported.
The Taliban leader is linked to car bombings and assassination attempts of Afghan civilians, government officials and security forces. Tips from local residents led troops to his location, where one armed militant brandished a weapon and tried to flee. Troops opened fire, killing two militants during the engagement. Security forces also confiscated several small-arms weapons and associated ammunitions.
In other news today throughout Afghanistan:
-- Security forces captured two suspected insurgents, while searching for a Taliban leader in Baghlan provinces Jadid district. The Taliban leader is linked to the recent assassination of the district governor in nearby Nahrin district.
-- In Khost provinces Sabari district, troops arrested a Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin terrorist for coordinating attacks on civilians and security forces.
In operations yesterday:
-- Coalition troops killed several armed insurgents using small-arms fire and precision airstrikes after seeing them maneuvering toward a historic insurgent fighting position in Helmand provinces Reg-e Khan Neshin district.
-- A coalition air weapons team killed an enemy fighter and disrupted insurgent activity in Ghazni provinces Andar district with a precision airstrike after spotting a group displaying hostile intent.
-- Security forces found several weapons stockpiles throughout southern Afghanistans Helmand province, which resulted in seizure of 1,800 assault-rifle rounds, 14 rocket-propelled grenades, five rocket-propelled grenade warheads and a pistol.
I love it when our forces kill and detain.
and in this story are both
I hope he was detained by the neck until he was dead, dead, dead. Thanks SandRat.
My son is an Advanced Infantry Marine in the Helmand Province right now. Before he went, they did a lot of classes about the people of the area and the muslims. I asked him what he thought about them, he said he didn’t really have an opinion. I shamelessly told him that I don’t like any of them, based on what I’ve learned. I wonder what he thinks now.
He calls every couple of weeks when they bring a satellite phone around because he is so far out there. After the first couple of weeks he said it was boring. The next call I asked if he was still bored. His reply was a short “no”.
Since I follow what is going on over there the best I can (with Freerepublic!), I had an idea of what he might have been involved with, and because I know my boy.
I asked him if he had to shoot anyone, he said yes.
I asked him if it bothered him. He said no, he thought it would but it didn’t. I told him it shouldn’t, because they are over there to get rid of the bad guys.
I just hope and pray when he gets back that it is something that he can live with. I know I can. I’m damn proud of him.
You don’t get much badder bad guys than Afghans. They are two thousand years of your iconic nightmare.
Best wishes to your son for a safe return and a positive future. My daughter is in the Coast Guard; she’s on a cutter in the Pacific, and it’s the last hour (Eastern Daylight Time) of her 20th birthday.
Thank you, and may your daughter stay safe as well.
