This is the general overseeing the American part of the air campaign in Libya. Air Force Maj. Gen. Margaret Woodward, commander of the 17th Air Force, based in Germany, seems to be an expert in refueling and mobility, which is probably why she was picked for Africa Command, whose planners likely expected the command mainly to be doing humanitarian relief missions.
Instead she is overseeing airstrikes by B-2 bombers, F-15E fighter/bombers, and F-16 CJ jammers.
To my knowledge, this is the first time a woman has ever overseen an air campaign.

Oops! We just lost that kinetic action, lol.
The new face of Kinetic action: A female general commands the U.S. air campaign
There, fixed it. Guss source did not get memo.
My gosh, I entered the Army in 85 and would now be an 05 if I had stayed in.
This lady is a LEUTENANT GENERAL! Talk about career path promotion.
She’s 50 and a three star?
That’s got to be a record.
No doubt foreign policy mag (CFR) is all for this. Apparently Kissinger who is CFR isn’t thugh. So maybe CFR isn’t as monolithic as we usually assume
That should put the fear of God in those swine!
“Thats got to be a record.”
Just like when you get on the trolley car: Tokens are required.
They have some minor disagreements as to the best way to destroy the West. Tactical, not strategical debates.
She’s not bad looking! Is she married?
so this entire no-fly BS was just an excuse to give combate points to PC military policies?
It seems right up there with the medal for courageous do nothing.
Affirmative action knows no bounds!
You beat me to it. An affirmative action General, leading thee troops under an affirmative action Commander in Chief.
Her specialty is refueling. His specialty is Communist agitation and winning elections by pulling the rug out from under the opposition with the help of crooked judges and the Chicago Mafia.
Wonderful. God bless our troops. And—get them out of there!
Women wage war compassionately.
the very model of a modern major general...
Oh, that’s funny! True, horrible but funny!
I was going crazy trying to think of that G&S song! Good for you.
Not guilty, above 10,000 foot ceiling.
All were going to end up do is allowing the Muslim Brotherhood to flourish in Libya when Moammar is beaten enough.
Makes me wonder if Obama is a deep cover agent for the Brotherhoood.
So what you're saying is that a woman has never, can never, and will never reach general rank in any armed service on her own merit? That every single instance is and alway will be because of affirmative action?
No disrespect to the General...I certainly have no military career to compare to hers. But she does look awfully young to be a three-star General. Don’t blame her but the people doing the promoting.
Read her bio-she ain’t no slouch.
Read her bio and it says she's a frocked two-star. That's military speak for acting major general.
“And, let’s face it, if the mothers ruled the war, there would be no (expletive) wars in the first place”
Margaret’s air campaign in Libya?
Nothing surprises me anymore...
I would say a sane, conservative society wouldn't allow women in the military at all except in extremely limited service areas such as medical care. But then again, I don't consider conservatism to just be the acceptance of what was liberalism 40 years ago.
Agree the General Woodward is a command pilot with more than 3,800 hours in the C-40, KC-135, C-37, T-38 and T-37.
Not sure if she has the skills to take on such a big event.
Only exceptional women can make it to the top on their own merits in this aspect of a man’s world - the world of making war. It is possible that she is one of those very exceptional women who did so, but the odds of that in the very politically correct, new feminized military, are very low.
The military has had to lower its standards across the board in order to be able to make itself look good to the Leftists who are running the country.
A FAIP, Protocol Officer and AFSLMO Alum...ugh.
You'd easily be an O6....
And you were able to tell that just by looking at her picture. How very perceptive of you.
A Frocked Maj Gen at that...
Not my comment, but sounds about right to me. Automatic laugher, sorry. And empirically, the fruits of the process that has produced our female general officers to datecan you say Janis Karpinski?appear to bear out that summation.
No, I’m saying that they are desperate to promote women to high rank.
This woman may be perfectly competent. But the odds suggest that she’d maybe be a colonel still if she were a man. Also, that it’s extremely unusual to put a refueling specialist in charge of a military mission like this.
I’d say the same thing if they put a male general in charge who had worked his way up in Supply. Supply is vital, but it doesn’t prepare someone to lead in battle.
We’ve seen what happens when they are desperate to have woman pilots. The result has been that a higher than average number of women pilots have crashed their planes or had other problems. Not that a woman couldn’t be a competent pilot, but that some were promoted beyond their capabilities simply for affirmative action reasons.
I didn’t make that assessment by looking at her photo. It’s based upon reality of how men and women are designed. Women as a whole accel in areas of life that men do poorly and vice versa.
Most women are not, repeat not, interested in war. Only a small percentage are interested and the ones who are only a small percentage will accel at it.
When female soldiers are sent to area of combat operations are taking place a good percentage will get knocked up just so they can be sent back State-side because they have no desire to fight like men do.
Time was that First Assignment Instructor Pilot (FAIP) would be hard to overcome. Assignments in OSD and Colonel Assignments helped a great deal, I’m sure. Times change and there’s nothing wrong with that. In her current position I doubt she’s selecting the targets. This air campaign appears to be pretty similar to what my old HQ AF office (Checkmate) created for Desert Storm...until the Chairman asked CSAF to disband and let Joint run things.
PC, diversity, and tolerance are swell aren’t they?
She’s a friggin’ bus driver, fer cryin’ out loud. (C-40, KC-135, C-37)
She got her first star under George Bush.
This woman may be perfectly competent. But the odds suggest that shed maybe be a colonel still if she were a man.
The odds are against any officer making flag rank. If memory serves only 1 or 2 percent of all officers entering a military service will wear a star. But that's just for certain white guys. By your beliefs, the odds of any woman or minority making general are pretty much a done deal, right?
Also, that its extremely unusual to put a refueling specialist in charge of a military mission like this.
You are aware, are you not, that the Air Force Chief of Staff, General Schwartz, was a C-130 pilot his whole flying career? A 'trash hauler' as the expression goes? Not a fighter jock? Yet he's runnig the whole shootin' match. Affirmative action promotion as well?
Weve seen what happens when they are desperate to have woman pilots. The result has been that a higher than average number of women pilots have crashed their planes or had other problems.
I would be very interested in seeing the statistics you have that support that claim.
Women have been flying combat missions in the Air Force and the Navy for years now. We still manage to make things go 'boom' when needed.
Gays and females allowed to serve is a leftist idea to degrade our forces.
Gee, there have been women in the military for generations. Those leftists move slow.
Sally fields is full of crap. Have you seen women fight each other? When I was kid, some of my best friends were guys I had previously fought at one time or another. Most women rarely forgive or forget.
Joint Air Operations Planners are still taught the Warden/Deptula campaign as the standard...
In my honest opinion:
1. All generals and admirals directly involved in the Libya action who refused to stand up and question Obama’s authority to issue “offensive” strike orders should immediately be issued their last paycheck and DD-214
2. All generals and admirals not directly involved in the Libya action who refused to stand up and question the same should be written up and put on notice that their careers are in jeopardy for not demonstrating the leadership required of them as commissioned officers.
3. All Captains and Colonels should be put on immediate notice that promotion in rank and job duties is imminent with an included warning and statements regarding the Constitution of the United States of America.
Would would do this? Tough call in terms of one person. However, Congress could certainly start cancelling and recalling budgets - and do the same for selected paychecks and benefits.
I want a military that understands without reserve that they serve both the Constitution AND a C-in-C who respects the same.
I must admit that it’s kind of cool to have a woman bombing Muzzies, Karma is a bitch.
I used to work with a woman that was a retired Lt. Colonel in the Army...she may have had some extra help on the way because she was a woman but I have a feeling she earned her promotions just like any guy had....she was a smart no nonsense more than capable leader....
Just answer the question!
“she’s a Major General.”
Yes! Yes! She is a major general...
She is the very model of a modern Major-General,
She has information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
She knows the kings of England, and she quote the fights historical
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
She’s very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
She understands equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem she’s teeming with a lot o’ news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse....
Gotta agree with you. Women and warfare? Not their field!
