2012: Our National Fiscal Armageddon?

The 2012 presidential and congressional elections are shaping up to be a referendum on whether the American people have the wisdom, the discipline and the will to save this nation.

The nation is on an unsustainable path to fiscal bankruptcy, whose leading long-term drivers are Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Yet at every turn, Democrats have obstructed reform with vicious, demagogic attacks on those genuinely trying to reform them.

George W. Bush deserves some credit for trying to propose reforms, but he was immediately savaged by scaremongers who claimed he was going after seniors and proposing a risky solution, mainly because his plan included a small privatization component.

But times have changed. We are at the proverbial crossroads. After two years of President Obama's reckless stewardship, this nation is in dire straits, and people are more informed and more alarmed. Also, new stars, such as Rep. Paul Ryan, have arisen to confront these challenges with the powerful arsenal of real facts and figures and the demeanor to command bipartisan credibility -- for now.

If the collapse comes before Obama leaves office, than it could be the end of the DemocRat Party. The problem is that by then, it may be too late for conservatives to be effective in cleaning up the mess.

It seems to me that the federal government made a pact with it’s citizens that if they paid into SS and medicare that they would get their money back when they retired... I understand that congress put enough weasel words in it so that they really don’t have to pay off. However, it was sold and still is being sold that it is an entitlement. We were sold on the idea, rightfully or wrongfully that we would get it back.

So the answer to this is that they pissed the money away “stole it from the citizens”, and the cupboard is bare. How the republicans need to approach this, is to honer the debt and force the U.S. government to sell assets IE; government owned property and use it to fund this debt to retirees.

The federal government owns 80 and 90 percent of the real estate in many western states. That property needs to become part of the SS trust fund.

Just my 2 cents...

That’s real nice, then maybe they can sell our land to China so they can fund the SS cry babies.

I want out. I could make more money with my deductions if it went somewhere else.

“That’s real nice, then maybe they can sell our land to China so they can fund the SS cry babies.”

First; People who paid in to SS for 45 years with a promise of a retirement are not “cry babies”. I figured it up that if I had invested my SS in the market myself, I’d have 3.2 million. It’s not my fault that the folks you helped to elect stole it all and gave it to people who were not productive.

Second; Since the federal government (people you voted for) pissed it away, they have an obligation to cover it as long as they have assets. And they do...

Third; The assets don’t have to be sold to other nations. I’ll take 300 acres of national park land and call us square... There are plenty of buyers for that land right here in the good old USA.

I'm concerned that just the opposite will happen. If the collapse is of sufficient magnitude, we may well have a martial law situation with the congress (worthless as it is) simply a rubber stamp for the edicts of a despotic President.

The man has already stated that he will implement his agenda by executive order if the congress will not legislate it. I don't see an official suspension of civil liberties as a very long leap from that.

“How the republicans need to approach this, is to honer the debt and force the U.S. government to sell assets IE; government owned property and use it to fund this debt to retirees.”

I used to think that Republicans, at least to a large degree, supported smaller government and self reliance.

After participating in a few threads on Social Security/medicare-caid I now realize that small government Republicans, and true conservatives are a much smaller minority than I had previously presumed.

“Gimme my check” Republicans are distinguishable from “Gimme my check” Democrats only on a few social issues.

If Republicans truly believed in smaller government, it would have happened sometime in the past 25 years.

Actual constitutional conservatives are a small but principled minority. The government checks have compromised the erstwhile conservative block. Now we have three groups - “gimme-my-check voters” (Republican/Democrat moderates who represent the electoral majority), principled constitutional conservatives, and commie-left-wingers.

The “gimme-my-check” Republicans are well represented on this site and some think they are conservatives. But in the end, they vote for the check.

The problem is that it IS already too late.

The debt is unsustainable, period.

And the fiat loving fools, who preach “the banks are OK,” well, listen to them at your own peril.

Gold, Silver, Food and ammo.

The ONLY way this debt can be honorably be re-paid is by putting the younger generation into slavery.

And debt slavery is NOT capitalism.

And neither is usury.

Too many people have had money STOLEN from them, and they think lying politicians will give it back. Ha!

But you are right. If this collapses further, the ‘GIMMIES’ will out shout any decency this country ever had.

You're absolutely correct.

I look at almost every political event now in Biblical terms. I don't predict when the end times will be, or anything like that nonsense. Even Christ told his disciples that only the Father knew when. But Christ also chastised his own for not reading the signs of the times.

It comes down to this: the Book of Revelation cannot come completely to pass unless the Antichrist can control the world economically.

That can happen, and it will. It most definitely will.

What if we just take a meat ax to the federal government..
You know....... make it much cheaper to run..
Which would provide excess money until we cut taxes to correspond to current needs..
