a growing number of retirees are heading for greener pastures in foreign lands, where their dollars go further.

Yes, the dollars go out of the country.

I’m confused. They have to go back to the US to get medicare covered care? Don’t they get “free” care courtesy of Mexican taxpayers?

That’s nice.

I wish them a peaceful and comfortable tax-free retirement.

But WTSHTF in their third world paradise, I hope they don’t expect the US taxpayer to send troops and the Navy to rescue them and ship all their booty back home for free.

But I know they *will*.

You’d have to be nuts to live in Mexico these days.

Costa Rica huh? i.e. legal prostitution?

For economics, why not Philippines?? I hear its pretty cheap to live there. Foreigners can’t own property though.

My daughter quit her full time career job as a  book editor and is now 'retired' (aka, looting iras) with family in Costa Rica.   The irony is she's now doing her same old editing job but contracting on line and clearing more money than ever.

File under 'how to retire before age 40'...

It's cheaper until you are kidnapped. Then there is the ransom problem.

Or, you're dead and no longer need to worry about health care or anything for that matter.

The Mexican medical center comment reminds me of that old interview on Firesign Theater”

Interviewer: How is your son Buz?

Interviewee: Oh, he’s in medical school for a few weeks in Mexico Bob.

Wow, watta a bunch of one dimensional bigots. You think the Land of the Big PX is the safest place to live?
Has the world's best or only good medical care? Get a clue!

Been to Miami lately? Chicago? Atlanta, you can find plenty of 3rd world conditions right here in the US, believe me.

Some insurance companies are paying for folks to go to India for treatment - cheaper and every bit as good, in some cases, better than you would get stateside.

Time to wise up - the US can be as dangerous as anywhere else in this world - esp if you live in/near bigger cities. And the US doesn't have a lock of good doctors or medicine.

THere are some downsides to living/working as an ex-pat - but it is not the "life in hell" as some would have you beoieve.

It's not for everyone, but don't knock till ya try it - you just might just be surprised.

It's all fun and games until the local polizia decide to shake you down, and throw you in a Mexican prison when you don't cough it up.

The corp. a friend works for has plants in Panama and will probably send here there for a few years in the upcoming months. She was balking at the idea. I told her she was crazy as it would be the best vacation she’d ever had and could live like a queen there on her American salary.

Sorry but I prefer a country thats a tad bit more of the “lighter” skin coloring. Too many places to be kidnapped in Central or South America, of course your dollar go further, because everything is crap there!

I’m 54, I will be flying down to Australia this next winter (summer there)and will be checking out some small ranch property.Probably around Victoria.

I have a patient that was talking about one of these great hospitals that the US .gov payes Medicare to take care of US citizens. It just got busted for very poor care and fraud. He said it was bad, bad, bad. I do not remember which South Amer. hell hole it was in but he is having his colonoscopy redone cause he is NOT sure it actually was done as he was told. They were just knocking people out and telling them they did a colonoscopy.

Eastern Europe is looking better to me everyday.

Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria.

Visited Romania a few weeks ago, that’s off the list.

Although I understand why some would want to go South of the border to retire - I’ll pass.
