The Salvation Army is the single best charity in America.

When I was deep in addiction and alcoholism, the United Way had no answers. The Red Cross wouldn't do anything but look crosseyed at me.

The Salvation Army housed me, clothed me, fed me, and all I had to do is follow their reasonable rules: No drinking or using, be in by 8 pm and out by 8 am, no stealing, look for a job.

Laz, that’s as compelling a testimony as I can imagine. The Salvation Army just went way up in my opinion. Congratulations on your recovery.

The Salvation Army has always been our family's favorite charity. When my parents arrived in New York Harbor on a cold November day, having escaped newly communist Czechoslovakia, they were greeted by the Salvation Army. Mom and Dad received their first cups of hot coffee in America from these wonderful people. They and their fellow passengers from war-devastated Europe were cold, seasick and scared. Being welcomed to their new home by the Salvation Army touched them deeply, and they've contributed ever since. I carry on the tradition with my own family.

Salvation Army employees are paid modestly, and overhead costs are kept very low. Sally is quick to get people on the ground in places where tragedy strikes, and they never ask for repayment for their aid. The Christmas bell ringers are often people who were lifted up from lives of misery, much as you've described. They do much good in this world.

I just sent my contribution to The Salvation Army, in which I have total confidence. And that was before I learned we have them to thank for your continued presence with us ;-).

Wow. I've known you on FR for years and never knew you had those problems. Good for you for getting squared away and good for the SALVATION ARMY.

Now, if only you could break your sex addiction. Har!

I agree. I also used to see them all over Japan when I was doing my business travel there. They do have an international fund where you can specify Japan/Tsunami relief.

And I am so glad you are "back", Laz. Takes guts and strength. Keep on, keeping on, guy!!
