WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama once said it was a "scandal" that then-President George W. Bush didn't force renewal of a federal assault weapons ban.
Now it's Obama himself who's steering clear of that and other politically sensitive gun-control measures, even while calling for a new discussion on weapons and "how we can keep America safe for all our people."

I have to say that I'd support making sure that looneys appear on the NICS instant check system to help prevent them from buying firearms at retail sale or through transfers, because that's what the instant check system was supposed to be all about.
It's the liberals who have been working overtime trying to make sure that illegal aliens, violent looneys, and felons don't show up on a NICS check. They want to control guns, not prohibited persons from acquiring them.
The Virginia Tech and Phoenix Arizona mass murderers should both have been prevented from buying firearms at a retail sales location, but liberals don't want lunatics stigmatized with mental disorders inside a government database.
... So, liberals would rather ban firearms magazines that can contain bullets over an amount that the liberals pulled out of their butts as an unacceptable number of bullets to have at the ready while they let lunatics run free from the booby hatch getting guns without restriction.
That's just idiotic.
