A commenter on the article link asked about any news of looting during the Tennessee floods last year - weren’t any/many stories there about looting and those areas are mixed.

There is a difference in Asian society. It works for their culture, not so much for ours.

Not a criticism, just an observation.

The LOA (Looters of America) is deeply saddened.

Individualism is good, but only if said individuals all believe more or less in the same set of cultural values. And those cultural values are that of a civilized type.

I would guess the Japanese were not raised on the ‘gibs me dat’ mentality.

True.

That area is MUCH less welfare-dependent than NOLA however.

You’ve obviously never heard of ‘Asahi’. Japanese make GOOD beer.

As for other comments I’ve seen on this thread...if being a homogenous society is a strength of the Japanese, the we in America are screwed. Our country has SO MANY cultures, we’d have to rid ourselves of 50% of the population...or better...in order to have a homogenous society.

Is that what we really want?

Being homogeneous is not a requirement. Teaching personal responsibility is.

It also helps when society as a whole shames shameful conduct.

It further helps when there is no pervasive wailing drumming up ideas of class warfare as the antidote to one's own lack of material success in life.

I was going to say, because you have a population that hasn’t been given lip service by their government for the last 150 years, but that would just start a fight...

I could tell you that there is about .001% of blacks who reside in Japan, but, I won't out of fear of being labeled a racist by the federal thought and word police!

I can state from experience they don’t have our kind of crime.

Years ago when I was stationed there, I bought a brand new Pioneer receiver, left it in the back seat of my car that didn’t lock, went to the movies and had dinner, came back and it was still there as I knew it would be.

My friend and I remarked about that then.

I’ve heard that there is no Japanese equivalent to the word “looting”.

In the 70’s if you went to jail before you were 18, you didn’t begin serving out your time until you were. YOU STILL WENT TO JAIL, IT JUST DIDN’T COUNT.
