KUHNER: Arab revolts spread to Europe
Wahington Times ^ | 3/13/11 | By Jeffrey T. Kuhner

The Arab freedom wave has now hit the shores of Europe and in the most unlikely of places: the Balkans. Croatia, an Adriatic nation that straddles the civilizational fault line between Central Europe and the Balkans, has been seething with public unrest and protests.

For weeks, thousands of demonstrators have been assembling almost daily in the capital, Zagreb, and across other cities in this country of 4.4 million. They are demanding that the government step down and call snap elections. The situation is volatile - and could turn violent.

The protests should come as no surprise. Croatia is on the verge of entering the European Union. Accession talks - a key step to joining the EU - are expected to conclude this summer. The ruling party, the Croatian Democratic Union, known by its acronym HDZ, has staked its reputation on EU membership. Yet, its EU-at-all-costs policy serves to obfuscate the regime’s abuse of power and incompetence.

If you read the article, you’ll see that the headline is dishonest.

From the article, it looks like people protesting a govt decision, nothing like Libya or Egypt protesting their form of govt.

All of thesae “arab freedom” movements smell like a fish that’s been rotting in the sun for two weeks after it got sprayed by a rabid skunk. Go deep enough into each and we’ll find a mixture of marxists, Mudslime Brotherhood, and AQ types, all of them competing to see how anti-freedom and anti-American they can be.

Most of Croatia was never under Muslim rule, and the small part that was, was reconquered from the Turks more than 300 years ago. The country is predominantly Catholic. There are a few Muslims (Albanians or Bosnians) but they can't be more than 3% of the population (judging from the World Almanac data which gives percentages of Catholics, Orthodox, and "none").

From what I've read, the government has been pushing the idea of joining the EU but the population is very divided on whether it's a good idea--perhaps less than 50% are in favor.

Asking the EU to help with your economy is like asking the Red Chinese to help with your human rights.
