"It's time to END the Player's Union and REPAIR the NFL"

I wrote a piece at ThurstonHowell.Net this morning titled "It's time to END the Player's Union and REPAIR the NFL" - in which I made the case that

in a truly capitalist system, the CONSUMER should be the winner in any business and as a consumer, my main agenda is to advance the cause of there being a full season in 2011 -even if we are watching "scrubs" like they did back in the 80's - or was it early 90's?

The cool thing about that year was that some players made the teams after the strike was over and remained in the league. It was nice to see them have that opportunity as Americans love underdogs.

So in the aforementioned piece I propounded the notion of the NFL having tryouts for these teams featuring LOCAL players. I think if they marketed it right, it could be very interesting. When I say marketing "right", I mean emphasize the local, home-grown talent aspect of it and perhaps make rules about players having to have previous residence closest to the team for which they are auditioning... In this reality show era, they can make the season into a great reality show on the scub players leading up through the actual games.

Honestly, I would love to see them just go with that until the current players, the "stars" started coming back like everyone else, without a union. Read the original column at ThurstonHowell.NET

The current problem is the amount of wannabe guys...who collect $3 or $4 million a year, and could easily be replaced by half the guys on the bench. The Redskins contract to Haynesworth is one that I would quickly throw out on the table. The owners allowed this to go into turbo....and frankly, a strike is the only way to reset the situation.

I like the comment:

Pro sports are currently all an illusion that makes little more sense for fans to get excited than to be excited if Apple has a record quarter – while having NO financial interest in Apple stock.

I think is was Gordon H. Clark who said, “Sports are the lowest form of human achievement but they’re fun to watch...”

This is so true. What can man really achieve in athletics? The “world’s fastest human” approaches 30MPH but a cheetah runs 65, a horse 45. For swimming, it’ worse. The fastest freestyler is something like 5.2MPH but a dolphin swims 35 mph.

“Superstar” is a joke when it is applied to athletics. Grown men make fortunes in MLB for PLAYING A KID’S GAME.

I would like to see the NFL completely implode.....of course, my favorite team is the Cleveland Browns...and they stink ...thought I should disclose that :-)

I too would like to see the NFL along with Obama TV disappear. The NFL are scum who attacked and smeared Rush and made sure he could not buy a team.

The owners screw taxpayers to build their stadiums by engaging in extortion to move the team.

The players by an large are show boats, thugs, steroid freaks and felons. A few have real talent like Tom Brady but most of it is assault and battery. The NFL also loves hussein.

Not possible with the current administration. Zero will intercede on the side of the players union and replace the owners with the Government in effect nationalizing the NFL.

“The players by an large are show boats, thugs, steroid freaks and felons.”

Well, anytime someone gets the bright idea to start a “competing” league, they fail because it takes so long to get a following and credibility.

Maybe some of the “better” owners can lead the way for our country and secede their franchises from the franchisor. That way they could have some strong teams in the new league with a following and that would help the new teams in the new league get an audience.

Look how quickly NFL expansion teams can fill a stadium despite having no history. That’s because they are playing against teams with cred.

The new league could also play REAL, non-PC football where sacking the QB and celebrating touchdowns and great tackles is LEGAL.

If football players with salaries of a million dollars a year, or more, are willing to go on strike for more money, then let them stand outside the stadium carrying their little picket signs whining about how they deserve more money, and replace every last one. Bust the union, and the idiot football players’ grandiose egos.

Why not just apply the antitrust laws to the NFL and make the bastards pay for their own stadium instead of screwing the tax payers.

The author of this article has it all wrong. In pro sports these days, the fan is not the consumer . . . the fan is the product. The largest source of revenue for the NFL is from television, which means that what they are really selling to their customers (TV networks and advertisers) is access to NFL viewers.

The evidence of this is that an NFL game that fills a television slot of 3 to 3.5 hours will typically only have 11-15 minutes of actual football on the field.

With that in mind, American football ought to be remembered as one of the biggest con jobs in modern history.

I appreciate you cynical view and on a micro level it is accurate. On a macro level, the fan is the customer because that is who the network wants to reach and if the fan doesn’t like the product, the fan won’t watch. As ratings decline, the price the networks bid will decline and evetually won’t buy if things are bad enough.

We can debate beyond that but ultimately - without the fan’s participation, it dies like any other business venture.

How about kicking out any NFL player that is arrested ?

That should fix it......besides there are too many of Holder’s people in the NFL.

Gives Obama TV plenty of time to run “stupid white man” commercials. Screw TV and the NFL.

Seems like more and more owners are Democrats and friends of hussein.

Right. But for the vast majority of the NFL’s revenue, the fan doesn’t spend anything but his/her own time. If the fans stop watching, then the NFL is going to have find something else to sell to its “customers.”

The Rooneys are big Zero backers. BHO gave the Ireland ambassador job to Dan Rooney as a gift for endorsing him. Rooney gave us the “must interview a black” rule for coach, but ALL the owners are white rich guys. The league is run by hypocrite idiots and owners. However, a real man in the NFL is Heinz Ward.
