MM, I wouldn’t try to link any eruptions to this earthquake - too much distance and time.

What is interesting about this quake was that on Tuesday in the exact same area was a 7.2 mag quake that generated a small tsunami, with a swarm of mag 4-5+ aftershocks. This could have been a foreshock to last night’s event - or wildly the 8.9 could be considered even an ‘aftershock’.

This will generate a lot of seismological reports in the following years for sure.

It has been 200 years since the great New Madrid quake series. While I have notice an every 200 years pattern to some earthquake and volcano events, I recently read that New Madrid research indicates a 500 year period for the really big ones. On the other hand, even a more modest one could cause serious damage with all the population/buildings now in the New Madrid/St. Louis area, especially given that there has been an upsurge in modest quakes in surrounding areas like Arkansas.

If I lived in that area. I would store lots of water in used milk jugs and other containers somewhere that nothing would fall on them. I would also have emergency bag(s) near the front or back door ready for a quick exit. Also boxes of canned and plastic bottled foodstuffs where it could easily be reached if there was damage to my home and I had to camp out or go live with friends and couldn’t go back inside safely. Better safe than sorry. Think of the poor folks after Hurricane Andrew.

There is a black hole of news coming out of Hawaii, just a lot of nothing, I fear the internet and the MSM is under a censor, all to protect the tourism image.

Really? This reminds me of Obamas birth certificate....that's blacked out too...

I bet their is a bit of reciprocal palm greasing going on.

If Obama were to exercise some form of internet control it would be events JUST LIKE THIS.

All the more reasons to have alternative communications, like shortwave.

I was afraid of this, wonder if we will have a VEI 6 or 7 volcanic event to end what I interpret as a 30 year period of more intense seismic activity out of each 100 for the past few centuries.

2139: Radiation levels at the damaged Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant are continuing to rise. The Jiji Press news agency says the levels are eight times above normal. Its report also cites a ministry official as saying there is a “possibility of a radioactive leak”.

Well....thanks for your kind words, Booboo. If you'd have taken some time scanning the different threads, you'd discover that once I'd gotten home, I've urged folks to pray for those most devastated by this seismic event in Japan.

I'm not a yuppie and neither is my son. My son is trucker who hauls oil to keep the power plants operating.......and since the seismic sea wave did no real damage here, he's already back on the job; three loads today instead of the normal five, after waiting for the mandatory evacuation order to be lifted and the docks and terminals reopened.

Just spent a sleepless night waiting for this to pass, good or bad, since I live in an evacuation zone. In Hilo, tsunamis are taken seriously....look that up.

Aloha Eye!

You got that right....the local radio news has been dismal so we've had to rely on the Coconut Wireless and a couple cell phone calls for information.

Just got home after spending a sleepless night away from home and now searching the net for real news.

Little damage anywhere except North and South Kona on the Big Island. They got a 10 foot surge that tore up the roads and damaged some establishments.

watching the video is so gut-wrenching. The shot from the air as the water encroaches on acre after acre of farm land, and the debris in the water had been people’s homes, cars, trucks, etc.

It’s a good thing the Japanese people have the ethic they do (vs. say, Haiti). They will rebuild, and damage, however horrific, will be less because of precautions they have taken over the past few decades.

Scientists are saying the tsunami wave is heading more south than east, so what hit Guam, your northern island and what has hit CA is mild compared to what they expect to hit Chile.

To protect Wall Street. The Dow closed up 60 points on a day like this.

I noticed the same thing. Pretty much no news on what has happened in the US from the tidal waves. Like someone is trying to hide it. If not for the internet then we would know nothing.

I am watching NHK (in Japanese) - my knowledge of Japanese is barely above beginner level, but I can pick out various words and phrases.

Every now and then they break into the broadcast with an "earthquake early warning" (kinkyuu jishin?) to alert viewers that a significant aftershock has occurred, and they give a rough location and identify the prefectures at risk - it may provide viewers a few seconds to take cover. It's chilling...

The sun is starting to rise, finally, and they are showing aerial photos of the destruction.

And their are other reports saying it is 1000X. I am not sure what to believe.

I too have been up most of the night watching this, some of the most gut wrenching video is of seeing waves of cars trying to go under a freeway overpass in the wave, and you see cars with wipers and flashers on, of another image of a car or a truck trying to outrace the wave at very high speed, all of a sudden it stops when the wave cuts them off, and then the chopper video ends.

And the fishing boats trying to climb over the wave, you see a massive belch of diesel smoke as the captain firewalls the throttles to point the bow near vertical, again we lose sight of the vessel.
