Two months after Camden, NJ, laid off 160 police officers, city prosecutors have released a sobering report showing a dramatic rise in violent crime in the drug-and-crime-ridden city of 80,000 residents.

Aggravated assaults with firearms jumped 259 percent in January and February compared to last year, and violent crime over all is up 19 percent, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office told the Philadelphia Inquirer. Murders and robberies, however, were down for the period.

Deep layoffs of city workers go into effect on Tuesday - cutting up to 383 jobs, or one-fourth of the city's employees. The exact number depends on whether public workers' unions make last-minute concessions... Three of Camden's past seven mayors have been sent to prison for corruption, including one who was convicted while he was still running the city.

The second most violent city in America just approved plans to layoff half its police force, according to NBC New York. Camden, N.J. will fire one in four city workers on Jan. 18, including half of police. This comes just days after Newark, N.J. fired 167 police officers, which marked the biggest force reduction in 32 years. Camden was named the second most violent city based FBI crime data that came out last week. Newark was named the 23 most violent city in America.

Camden will lay off nearly half of its police officers and a third of its firefighters while eliminating positions in every city office, according to a layoff plan approved Tuesday by the state. The 383 total layoffs represent about a quarter of the city's work force, and touch all corners of city government, from 15 positions in the municipal court to 20 police dispatchers.

"They love seeing a 40-year-old cop get out of that car instead of a 24-year-old guy who can actually chase them down," an unnamed police officer told the Times, referring to criminals.

And residents are wasting their time, sources say, if they report nonviolent serious crimes. "If you're not shot or murdered, or if it does not involve a drug gang, it's not going to be investigated," another anonymous cop told the Times. An anti-crime group called The Guardian Angels volunteered to patrol the streets after January's layoffs.

Camden Mayor Dana Redd said 100 police officers could have kept their jobs if they took a 20 percent wage cut. The officers instead agreed to a wage freeze and unpaid leave days, which was rejected. Sixty-seven firefighters and 100 clerks were also axed in an attempt to close the city's $26.5 million deficit, according to the Star-Ledger. The Camden public library was shut down as well.

Camden is one of the nation's most impoverished and crime-ridden cities, though a drop in the murder rate in 2009 and 2010 raised hopes among residents that the tide could be turning.

I’ll wager that this city has been run by Democrats for many years. Just a “wild guess” on my part.

Instead of a Neighborhood Watch, they should start instituting a Neighborhood Street Sweeper.

They cut polioce officers, but I bet not a single position got cut in City Hall where I’m sure the lowest bureaucrat makes more than a police officer.

Police don’t prevent crime. They conduct investigations.

St Louis, Missouri and Camden, New Jersey have been trading back and forth the "honor" of the most violent crime city in the entire US for a number of years.

St Louis has been a blue city for many many years.

You’re making it look worse than it is, they did tear down the prison to make room for waterfront development. /s

IF there was no police union, the city could hire people to patrol for less. I wouldn’t rush to do that everywhere, but this is an emergency.

I wonder how you blame this on the republicans.

Burn a cross in front of city hall and the dunderhead obuma will send 1,000 FBI agents to walk around and eat doughnuts. Tack up pictures of Robert Byrd on telephone poles.
