DOD Proposes Tricare Increases
VFW Washington Weekly ^ | Feb. 18, 2011 | Teresa Morris

Posted on 02/18/2011 9:15:41 AM PST by katiedidit1

DOD Proposes Tricare Increases: As expected, the Defense Department FY 2012 budget recommendation contains plans to raise Tricare enrollment fees for working-age military retirees — first by 13 percent, then by linking future increases to double-digit medical inflation. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is against both plans. "Asking someone to voluntarily give up 20 or more years of their youth on the simple promise of a pension and lifelong medical care for themselves and their spouses is a cost this nation and our government should be more than willing to bear," said VFW National Commander Richard Eubank. What the hell. The RATS already got their money’s worth out of our bodies, we haven’t anything they want and they know most of us won’t vote for their socialistic programs, so why not screw us.

In our perilous fiscal condition, nothing can be taken off the table. We should minimize the impact on those things we feel have the most value, but this fiscal crisis means everything has to be considered.

As much money as the illegals cost us, in one way or another (including medical care, schools, tuition in college, food stamps, non-payment of taxes, and other “considerations”—not to mention the costs of jailing the criminal elements and then deportation), you’d think they could figure out a way to stop this constant drain before putting yet more of a burden on veterans and their families.

Military Pensions (colas) are frozen for 5 yrs. The 13% increase will go UP as the cost of living increases...this is just the beginning. While the unions are exempt from Obamacare? our troops will bear a huge loss of benefits earned.

Oh please...

I am retired Navy. I have a job that includes medical coverage. I had an option to use Tricare (and have the company pay the small premium) or take the medical coverage. I took the coverage because taking Tricare would have cost me more in the long run.

I am certain that most retiree’s who work take medical coverage from their employer - after all 85% of people have medical coverage and most of them are covered by employers.

I will use Tricare when I become eligible for medicare.

And flame away but anyone who retired from the military after 20 years and DON’T work are probably few and far between. The vast majority of military retirees never saw combat and while arduous would probably go back into the service in a heartbeat given the chance. Everyone makes it sound like it was some horrible experience - maybe if you are getting shot at, but those numbers are not huge either. Compared to the civilian work environment the military is probably one of the best places to work in the country.

Plus free medical care is available at the local VA clinic.

Everyone has to expect a reduction in entitlements and if that means I have to pay a little more for medical coverage so be it.

I get kind of tired of the few very vocal retirees (both military and SS recipients) who on the one hand cry about deficits and on the other hand whine if they are asked to give up a little.

Give up a little now or a lot later.

You do know that military pensions (colas) are frozen for 5 yrs? while the 13% increase is just a beginning as the cost of living goes UP so does the amount our retirees have to pay. While unions are exempt from Obamacare...where is the justice? the military has paid more than their fair share and you can’t repair broken bodies and expect older people to compete in todays job market.

I’d have no problem paying this, once I see the Departments of Energy and Education zeroed out, along with the long list of agencies (Americorps, Corp. for Public Broadcasting, etc.) eliminated.

Well, if they increase Tricare, then my net retirement pay will go down again, as it has since I retired 3 years ago.

You are one of the few military retirees that never saw combat. The VA is not free to retirees...there is a fee and the lines are long. You do understand that the 13% increase is just the beginning...and colas are frozen for 5 yrs? the increase goes UP as the cost of living increases. Tell that to my husband who did 3 tours in Korea and 2 in Nam...has half his stomach gone, one kidney gone, loss of hearing in his right ear and part of his left lung gone and he never asked for one dime in disability. Also, it is no piece of cake to serve in the military and move all over at a moments notice...it is done because of the benefits. Lower wages than in the private sector. YOUR smug attitude is disgusting

My son-in-law is a vet who was wounded during Operation Iraqi Freedom and is currently disabled. He receives excellent care from a grateful nation. I expect we will continue to honor that commitment to the extent possible.

RE: Plus free medical care is available at the local VA clinic.

Incorrect. Military retirees are not eligible to use VA medical services unless they are seeking treatment for a documented service related health medical condition.

Meanwhile, the freeloading POS people in this country will be lined up to get their welfare payments.
Meanwhile, the freeloading POS people in this country will be lined up to get their welfare payments.
When I decided to make the military a career, retirement with medical benefits was one of the reasons.
The pay sucked the first 15 of my 21 years. I spent tons of time away from my family, and God knows how many 12 to 16 hours shifts I pulled. It was OK because upon retirement I was promised a meager amount each month and medical benefits.
I am willing to sacrifice and forego some of what I was promised, but not while some scum liberal tit suckling blight on society get a check for doing nothing.

“You cut off lazy good for nothing welfare parasites and then come back and talk to me. “

This is the recurring argument from conservatives on FR when their check, benefit, or other freebie is impacted.

It’s why we’ll never ever pay off our debt, or even reduce government.

It’s also why you, and every other government beneficiary have a chance of getting nothing after we default. No medical, no retirement. no nothing.

Again, repeated the specious argument advanced by conservatives on FR when their ox is gored.
