TEHRAN, Iran -- Hardline Iranian lawmakers called on Tuesday for the country's opposition leaders to face trial and be put to death, a day after clashes between opposition protesters and security forces left two people dead and dozens injured.

Tens of thousands of people turned out for the opposition rally Monday in solidarity with Egypt's popular revolt that toppled President Hosni Mubarak after nearly 30 years in power. The demonstration was the first major show of strength from Iran's beleaguered opposition after canceling planned rallies for the past year when authorities refused permission.

In Washington, President Barack Obama criticized the Iranian government for its harsh treatment of protesters and noted the irony of its support for Egypt's uprisings while repressing demonstrators at home.

At an open session of parliament Tuesday, pro-government legislators demanded opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mahdi Karroubi and former reformist President Mohammad Khatami face be held responsible for the protests.

Pumping their fists in the air, the lawmakers chanted "death to Mousavi, Karroubi and Khatami."

"We believe the people have lost their patience and demand capital punishment" for the opposition leaders, 221 lawmakers said in a statement.

No, they’re opposed to the death penalty, except for babies in their mother’s womb and patients on life support.

Wow. Somehow when I read the headline I completely overlooked “Iranian” and assumed it was about Democrats in Congress.

Obama is oddly quiet on this.
Or maybe he only hates dictators who are friendly towards the USA.

No, Barry is in favor of regime change when less than 1% of the population hits the streets calling for it, as he commented about Egypt. He says that's how democracy works.

Something strongly tells me he's really in favor of the Iranian guys-in-power model of snuffing out the opposition if it should occur here.

You could call it hypocrisy, but too few in the US get excited about such a fuzzy term as that's come to mean. They're waiting to see the connection to real consequences.

Those actual consequences of total financial ruin, loss of possessions, auctions and grand larcenies by thuggish gangs, poverty, people dying in the streets, family members raped, killed by gangs, etc. will be what it takes. And they will get it.

Ah, the great irony of a dictatorial regime. Their news services pretend for days that everything is perfectly normal. No footage of protests. No news stories. Everything is peachy keen.

Meanwhile their rubber stamp politicians vocally and publicly call for the executions of the leaders of the officially non existent protests.
