I hope Mr. Daley's retirement is short and filled with visits to doctor's offices and clinics.

how is something which happened a decade ago breaking news, barring some new development?

Having read as much of Professor Lott’s article as I could stomach, I can’t help but observe that it would seem that the outgoing mayor didn’t get the memos about the “need for civility in our political life,” or, if he did get them, was too busy to read them carefully.

I lived in Chicago for 10 years. Toward the end of my stay, Daley and the Chicago thugs were on the front page of the Tribune each day, with investigative reports illustrating the level of corruption he was involved in. He had Teflon status, almost to the extent Obama had early in his presidency. You could print up a murder rap on the guy, and people would turn a blind eye to it. Daley has been incredibly fortunate his entire career. He strikes me as having severely limited intellect. His treatment of the press has been painful to watch at times.

What was scary? Did he try to speak English?

I am wondering, if the Mayor of Chicago can shape the news through manipulation and intimidation, just think what power the POTUS has to shape what we hear and see. Scary indeed...

Hey John. I wasn't there, and so I can only go by your words, but it appears your encounter -- while scary -- was less with Daley and more with the Chicago political machine.

The machine transcends one man. Daley is unstable, and terribly low-intellect, no doubt, and the machine is steered by him in many ways, but political machines tend to take on their own initiative and life (c.f. Tammany Hall).

It is the picking of a nit, perhaps, yet the title had me thinking you would have a personal interaction with Daley that was chilling. Your opponents might point out this nit. Wish I could have seen the article first, and I might have suggested you offer the title of "My Scary Encounter With Chicago's Daley Political Machine".

You are a wonderful intellect and a great man. Salute to you, dear sir.

HORRID grammar. Let me try again: “”My Scary Encounter With The Chicago Political Machine Under Daley”.

So Daley was fine with having the police rough-up Professor Lott a bit, spread professionally damaging slanderous lies about him and then to have him silenced or fired. But according to HillBuzz Daley's a great guy:
The one thing you really need to know about Daley, though, was just how nice of a man he honest too goodness is. One day last week, one of my friends had lunch downtown with his wife and little baby, in an Irish pub somewhere in the Loop’s warren of tiny buildings jammed between skyscrapers. In the back, at a table all by himself, sat Da Mayor, reading the paper and munching his lunch. Daley saw the little baby staring at him, and he smiled, waived, and came right over to see the little boy…who instantly lit up when the Mayor gave the baby loving attention. He stopped and chatted with my friends for a good ten minutes while their food came, as if he was an uncle or old family friend they ran into…instead of a politician they had never met. This has been my experience with Mayor Daley the whole time I’ve lived in Chicago.

-- "Chicago political experts believe Obama will not seek a second term"

Al Capone loved children too. As one of Scarface's grandniece's said:
"He would get down on the floor like a big teddy bear. He loved children."

Expect more of the same from a mayor Emanuel. He’s the guy that stabs the table with a steak knife and says, “DEAD” referring to anybody that crosses him.

Daley is and has always been a thug, just like his father. None of Lott’s story should come as a surprise to anyone.

I feel for him, and yet it angers me.

He stayed silent.

Silence is consent.

Both Mayors Daley were thugs. The younger distinguished himself by closing Meigs Field, the Chicago lakeside airport, in the middle of the night, by sending his minions to dig trenches across the runway. Daley hardly bothered to use or further pursue legal means, he just acted like any tyrant would when they don't get their way.

I hope his rotten acts will follow him to his early grave.

You were very fortunate that you did not get thrown in one of his trenches.

At that point a woman walked over to me and asked me if I was John Lott from the University of Chicago. I said that I was, and she informed me that I was not allowed to ask any questions -- no additional explanation was offered.

Scratch a liberal, find a fascist.

Thank goodness this thug political culture is confined to one city and state, and that no one produced by it could ever be taken seriously as a national candidate. Oh wait.

All of Chicago is run by thugs... not just the Mayor’s office. Mr G was working in a downtown building and some union gave him a really hard time about something... until he discovered that all the fire walls in an 80+ floor building had holes in them for the cable TV runs. They decided to leave him alone after that.
