BLOOMINGTON, Ind. A school principal has apologized to one of his students and her family after they protested that she'd been told to sing the Star-Spangled Banner in a more "traditional" way.
The formal apology by Bloomington(IN) High School North principal Jeff Henderson was made public Thursday after a nearly two-hour meeting with student Shai Warfield-Cross, her family and other supporters.

On one hand at least its being sung instead of ignored.
I agree. The song was written a certain way, sing it that way.
She sang it the way she wrote it./sarc
They should sing all four stanzas like I did
I hope sometime to sing it again at a Commie Quaker meeting or an anti war demonstration >>>>veg<<<<<
I listened to her singing and it wasn't too far from "Traditional".
It is so hard to stand, alone, in front of hundreds/thousands of people and sing The National Anthem, a song that everybody thinks they can sing, {better that what they are hearing} that until you've actually done it, I'd withhold judgment on this young girl.
I applaud her for having the guts just to do it.
Next thing you know the Gay community will demand changing the last line to “the Land of the Free and the homos depraved.”
Shai?
Hyphenated last name for a child?
Part of it is I don't like all these songs jazzed up in such a manner. I prefer a more straight version.
I guess there are people who don't like my singing either.
Probably wouldn't like post #9 then.
She did stylize it a little. For the the most part, she was raising some of the low notes, probably because of the key it was in. Her timing was off at parts, but overall, a respectful rendition. I’d leave her be or get someone with the right range for a hard song.
I agree. Sing it the way it is written.
The Francis Scott Key Monument in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park has engraved upon it all *six* of the original stanzas. My church hymnal has four stanzas but the monument is the only place I’ve ever seen the other two.
Let her take some voice lessons and learn what terms like "phrasing" and "pitch" mean. Then come back and sing it in public.
Sorry, but this girl couldn’t carry a note in a bucket.
I’m not convinced this rendition was the one she wanted to sing either. My take on this, is that she was really going to butcher the song to prove what a great performer she was.
This is our national anthem. Some latitude is reasoned, but to butcher it as some folks do, is not right.
If you can’t stick to the traditional version, find something else to do, and let someone else who will do it right, do it.
I know of a fifth stanza written by Oliver Wendell Holmes when he was in the Civil War. I'm not interested in singing it because I feel it is overkill.
I have never heard of a sixth stanza. I saw the four stanzas in one of some big book of America. It was reading the comments of Liberal, Isaac Asminov -- HERE -- that convinced me to try and learn all four stanzs.
Everyone here knows it was adapted from a dedication to a drinking society: Anacreon in Heaven
