MIAMI -- South Florida U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen will deliver the Republicans' response to the President's State of the Union in Spanish.
Ros-Lehtinen is expected to speak Tuesday night immediately following President Barack Obama's address. Her speech will be aired nationwide by Spanish-language media. A spokesman for Ros-Lehtinen says her remarks will cover the same themes as the response given in English by U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis.
Ros-Lehtinen will deliver the speech from Miami, where she is tending to her ailing mother.

I’m with you on this.
It’s one thing for people to be conversant in a second language...the kind that is in everyday usage. It’s quite another for them to be nimble in the double-speak of gov’t. It’s very important that Latinos also understand the kind of deep shit we are in, and why cuts are necessary. This is complicated and serious stuff, better comprehended in one’s first language.
For that matter, if we have members willing to translate the GOP response in other languages to targeted communities, even better. Vietnamese, Swahili, Portuguese...I don’t care.
Cuz, we’re all in the same boat, folks.
With a name like Lehtinen, she should give it in Finnish.
