College bound, but undocumented ('Illegals should get College in-state discounts')

Our view: If you graduate from a Maryland school, you should be able to attend college at in-state tuition rates.

Maryland spends, on average, a total of nearly $200,000 each to educate its students from kindergarten through grade 12. Obviously, the state has a lot invested in every one of them — and just as obviously, it would be folly to throw any of it away.

Yet that's precisely what the current rules regarding in-state college tuition rates for children of illegal immigrants seem designed to accomplish. While Maryland students who are U.S. citizens are automatically entitled to reduced rates at the state's public colleges and universities, those who aren't must pay out-of-state rates. In principle, the difference can amount to thousands of dollars a year, potentially putting college out of reach for many youngsters.

The issue is expected to be hotly debated in the Maryland General Assembly this year, where state Sen. Victor Ramirez is proposing to extend in-state tuition to the children of undocumented immigrants. Lawmakers need to ask themselves whether it truly makes sense — educational, economic or moral — to spend $200,000 educating a student without regard to immigration status, as required by federal law, then turn around and tell that same student he or she can't go to college.

Opponents of extending in-state tuition rates to undocumented students are quick to argue it would cost the state millions of dollars it doesn't have. (clip)Even if some of them did choose to go on to earn bachelor's and advanced degrees, the state would eventually recoup its investment in the form of higher tax revenues.

The other bill the Democrats plan on pushing is same-sex marriage. MDers get what they deserve re-electing Governor O Malley after he rammed thoughh the largest tax increase in MD history on a Democrat only vote.

The article says "While Maryland students who are U.S. citizens are automatically entitled to reduced rates at the state's public colleges and universities, those who aren't must pay out-of-state rates."

Which is not true either. Legal residents with green cards that are not citizens also get the discount, it's only illegals that don't consistent with Federal Law.

State residents are presumed to be taxpayers who help to fund the state university system, so a tuition break for them makes sense. Illegals are not contributing to the tax base; they siphon money and services which are paid for by others. In no way do they deserve a tuition break.

It is a disgrace that the rule of law has given way to political pandering by liberals so as to shore up their ever-shrinking base.

“Lawmakers need to ask themselves whether it truly makes sense — educational, economic or moral — to spend $200,000 educating a student without regard to immigration status, as required by federal law, then turn around and tell that same student he or she can’t go to college.”

Maybe we should ask ourselves why are we spending $200,000 to educate students that shouldn’t be here in the first place? And since that is “per student”, the illegal family with 5 kids = a million or so.
Or, since we’re so keen on “entitlements”, why shouldn’t they get free college to go along with the other freebies?

I don’t think they should have received the K-12 in the first place. How hard is it to screen them. I remember having to have both my kids birth certificate AND their shot records, even though they are now 8th and 11th grade, I’m pretty sure a birth certificate was required to prove they were the correct age by the cut-off date.

Illegal aliens should never be admitted to universities in the United States.

Why is MD letting illegals go to public schools in the first place?

"should" is inherently a moral proclamation.
What is the standard of morality by which this "should" can be proclaimed?

Of course, demanding any sort of precision in thinking totally baffles a lib and their arguments, and usually just makes them mad.

My daughter is going to college out of state and cannot get in-state tuition, but some illegal alien can.

Words fail me about how angry that makes me.

I can’t go to college in Maryland and pay in-state tuition. I’m an American citizen.

Maryland is THE freak state. Tacoma Park lets illegals vote in their elections...have for years. Maryland taxpayers give millions each year to CASA MD, an illegals lobbying and voting group. Maryland gives illegals drivers licenses (and conveniently has “motor voter”). Maryland gives to America van holen. mikulski, cummings, hoyer etc etc. Maryland is a “sanctuary” state. Maryland is the land of equal opportunity losers.

Quit putting them thru the state K-12 schools & sve $200,000 per student!!!

Doesn’t take a Harvard economist to figure this out.

Maybe I should ‘enhance’ my resume?

Better yet this is for those born outside the USA whose parents are illegal. They are legally illegal and it's against Federal law to do what these Dems are proposing, unfortunately no penalty was put in Federal law.

sick the problem is that libtards have ADD. You show them a 14th amendment that turned slaves into citizens and you hear them talk about the right to in-state tuition for illegals.

THAT IS WHATS WRONG WITH THEM
