Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru who inspired television viewers to trim down and pump iron for decades before exercise became a national obsession, has died. He was 96.
LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay on California's central coast, his longtime agent Rick Hersh said.
Lalanne ate healthy and exercised every day of his life up until the end, Hersh said.
"I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for," Elaine LaLanne, Lalanne's wife of 51 years and a frequent partner in his television appearances, said in a written statement.
LaLanne credited a sudden interest in fitness with transforming his life as a teen, and he worked tirelessly over the next eight decades to transform others' lives, too.
"The only way you can hurt the body is not use it," LaLanne said. "Inactivity is the killer and, remember, it's never too late."

I hope the juice is good where he’s at.
He was quite the encouragement to many people over the years.
May God be with those he left behind.
Sad news. God Speed, Jack Lalane.
96? I’d guess you would have to say he knew what he was talking about.
God Speed, Jack Lalanne. . .(fixed it) and a bump.. .
I remember seeing him on black n white TV way way back in the 60’s when I was a little kid.
RIP
Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. :*( I grew up when he was still on tv cheering people on. Prayers for his wife, family and friends.
RIP to a great man. He was ahead of his time.
Rest in peace good man. Say hello to my Dad, tell him I miss him!
Prayers for his family!
He was no Barrack Obama thats for sure
So Sad! I have always looked up to him, I remember him complaining about how we are feeding our kids so much junk food. I often think of him when I work out, even at 50,I can still do above average feats! we will miss him dearly!
He was good till the last squeeze.
I need to follow his advice more and man this keyboard a bit less.
I remember his old show from when I was a wee lad (born in ‘54). As his wife said, he was an American icon.
RIP Jack..... I watched him when I was a kid and I ain’t no spring chicken.
May God Bless him and comfort his wife and family. He made THIS fellow Minnesotan proud! Rest in Peace, sweet man of integrity and strength.
My babysitter, an elderly woman, used to watch Jack’s show. That had to be about 1965. Awesome man.
I remember watching his show when I was a kid, my mom doing his exercises.
I told my mom the other day and she said “Oh my god, that’s how long I’ve been trying to lose weight”...
RIP Jack LaLane. Better equipment up there, anyway.
