Legendary journalist Seymour Hersh has uncovered some sinister conspiracies during his long career, but his latest revelation is drawing some puzzled reactions and angry denunciations.
In a speech this week in Doha, Qatar, Hersh advanced the notion that U.S. military forces are directed and dominated by Christian fundamentalist "crusaders" bent on changing "mosques into cathedrals."
According to an account of the speech in Foreign Policy magazine, Hersh alleged that Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the retired head of the Pentagon's Joint Special Operations Command and briefly the top commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, was among several senior officers who are members or supporters of exclusive Roman Catholic organizations such as Opus Dei and the Knights of Malta.
Neoconservative advisers to President George W. Bush took the attitude that " 'we're gonna change mosques into cathedrals,' " Hersh, a writer for the New Yorker magazine, said in the speech. "That's an attitude that pervades, I'm here to say, a large percentage of the Joint Special Operations Command." The command is the part of the military focused on targeted missions to kill enemy leaders, primarily in Afghanistan and Iraq. Its operations are almost always secret.
He added: "This is not an atypical attitude among some military - it's a crusade, literally. They see themselves as the protectors of the Christians. They're protecting them from the Muslims [as in] the 13th century. And this is their function."
As for President Obama, Hersh said he has been blind to the drift in America's foreign policy. "Just when we need an angry black man," he said, "we didn't get one."
There seem to be a few problems with Hersh's assertions.

If only that were true!
Another deranged leftist at the NYT.
Oy vey.
Lefty liars and nutcases. The real fear is that the cathedrals will be turned into mosques with the full approval of such nutcases.
We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity-- Ann Coulter, 9/13/01
The world would be a far, far better place.
They see themselves as the protectors of the Christians. They're protecting them from the Muslims [as in] the 13th century. And this is their function."
And he has a problem with our military protecting our country? Of course its their function!
Nifty trick, considering that a significant portion of those called "neoconservatives" are Jewish.
Hersh is as nutty as the Tucson shooter and is obviously off his meds.
Yeah, right, See-more, that’s why the Christians in Iraq are being murdered off before our very eyes. Hersch is an embarrasment to himself.
What hersheybar wrapper did he find his power for logic and
journalism under? I need proof Bush ever had a policy of changing Mosques into Cathedrals— which would NOT be a bad policy if true. As for the angry black man pretending to be President he has done much to raise the bloody flag of Islam over all of America and greased the skids for a victory mosque at Ground Zero. What the West needs is a modern Charles Martel —not an angry black Muslim.
Seymour Hersh is a steaming pile of crap. I wouldn’t belive a fraction of what he says.
Gads, crazy and reading too much Dan Brown garbage.
Oh - and he suffers from CDS, Christian Derangement Syndrome. This is closely related to BDS, Bush Derangement Syndrome, and in fact the latter may simply be a manifestation of CDS. (One of the things people hated about Bush was that he was a Christian.)
LOL ...Have blintz with your cannoli
“As for President Obama, Hersh said he has been blind to the drift in America’s foreign policy. “Just when we need an angry black man,” he said, “we didn’t get one.”
Could you imagine the reaction if a Republican had said this?
“Legendary?”
“Journalist?”
This flake is nuttier than a snikers bar.

Seymour Hersh made his bones long long ago with his story of the “My Lai Massacre”. Like Woodward and Bernstein, together and later as “solo acts”, the MSM has lionized him
and pays attention to EVERY BIT of tripe that flows from his pen. He is WAY behind the learning curve in all his assertions about this particular phase of our military/political history, and like most Lefties-with-no-place-to-go, his ‘analysis’ is forced into a place of no return-—it only strengthens the enemies hand. Hersh has ascribed to America and its military policy the EXACT same things that form the core ‘beliefs’ of the Islamic Jihadists-—that’s how far afield his powers of objective analysis have travelled. And note the weak-kneed ‘let’s walk it back’ qualifying phrases like “this is not an atypical attitude among the military”——fact is, Hersh has no ‘stories’ anymore, so he fabricates one out of his own ‘attitudes’, and they happen to be stories with no more substance to them than analyzing “attitudes” among the Military. This is EXACTLY the kind of vacuous pseudo-journalism that increasingly forms the ENTIRETY of the Washington Post’s contributions to “the National Discourse”.
