USS Ronald Reagan to Spend a Year at Bremerton Naval Yard

The best names for a carrier are places where naval pilots made their names shine: Midway, Coral Sea. Yankee Station would be another good one.

It seems as though they just launched it recently. Isn’t it a fairly new ship? Why does it need maintenance already?

I would like to see another USS America or, alternatively, USS United States. I don’t care if it sounds redundant.

As for the Reagan, I would argue that he deserved to have that big gal named after him because I don’t think there was any President more beloved. George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford were both WWII Navy combat veterans, so that was OK, too.

George W? No. I personally think he was a good President, but not a great President — and there is no Navy tie-in.

Clinton? Obama? NO WAY IN HELL!!!!

I was aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt for 2 years, when one day I ran into a good friend from high school. We knew each other immediately. He had been aboard for a year and a half.
Yep, they're big.

Navy ships operate in extremely harsh environments and aircraft carriers, in particular take a tremendous beating. Ships are in some form of maintenance mode 24/7 and the crews just can’t keep up with the maintenance needed.

When underway, 6,000 men and women and up to 80 aircraft are beating the crap out of it - from the flight deck that sees flight ops up to 14 hours a day and aircraft moves 24 hours a day, to the galleys that crank out over 18,000 meals a day, to the passageways, laundry facilities, racks, etc. Throw in foul weather and heavy seas and you’ve got quite a mix.
