Former sailors, soldiers and Marines are expressing outrage at Navy Secretary Ray Mabuss decision to name a naval warship after recently deceased Pennsylvania Democratic Congressman John Murtha.
The opposition is largely a function of Murthas actions and comments during his final years. Murtha became known as one of the most vocal opponents of the war in Iraq despite voting in 2002 for the resolution that authorized the use of force against Saddam Hussein. In 2005 he declared the war unwinnable, and pushed a resolution to get the troops out of the country.
The U.S. cannot accomplish anything further in Iraq militarily, he said. It is time to bring them home.
Murtha angered many again in 2006 when he accused eight Marines of deliberately killing Iraqi civilians in Haditha in cold blood. As of today, charges against six of the Marines accused have been dropped, one acquitted, and a court martial for the sole remaining defendant has been postponed.
A scathing Washington Times editorial pointed to Murthas demonization of the Haditha Marines as one of the primary reasons for the warship outrage.

You wouldn't have to deny funds, you would just have to change the federal statute that gives the SecNav authority to name the ships himself, and then Congress could assert its authority to name the vessels. Of course, that would start a political "war of naming" that would never end.
There might be some statutory limitation about naming other things after living people. I don't know. But, there are MANY examples of US Navy ships being named after living people - USS Ronald Reagan. USS George HW Bush. USS Jimmy Carter, etc, etc.
I'm pretty sure that the statutory authority naming SecNav as the naming authority is very broad. Everything else is left to Naval tradition.
The name I use for this ship would get me banned from FreeRepublic. So I wlll only refer to the pennant number, LPD-26.
I’d say he does deserve a dog park named after him. After all, dogs relieve themselves all over the park. I think that’s a fitting tribute.
Also aka “We’ve Already Lost”
IF THEY DO... WE RENAME IT WHEN PALIN IS ELECTED. Murtha burns in hell... anyone naming this ship after him will join him one day.

In the spirit of modernity, I propose -
The USS Liberace.
No, no, no a thousand times NO!!! Just because he died doesn’t mean you have to name something after him. I hate liberals.
Why not the USS Benedict Arnold?
This could be the flagship, with the US Murtha being an assigned support ship.
This fleet of a few ‘distinguished’ Libtard heroes could be a Navy out-reach program to disinfranchised Libtards everywhere. All that is required is that the sailors hate America and everything it stands for.
No need for engines, as Libtards are all about talk, not action.
It would be armed with harsh words, some papers with generalized santions that can be issued, perhaps some plackards for the sailors to write their Anti-American slogans, and we could save a fortune not having to issue soap or shampoo.
What? Do you have a problem with a ship named after Ensign George Gay - the only survivor of Torpedo 8 at Midway? /s
The “USS Murtha” will be a shell only. There won’t be a power-plant or anything else inside the hull or superstructure. Oh, and there will only be a few deckhands for appearance sake. The vessel will be just like the Potemkin village that was his congressional district. That is a whole bunch of shell corporations that held non-performing federal contracts, enriching a few political cronies of the congressman.
A fitting tribute if you ask me.
Nope, that was his name, may God bless his soul.
Other than an actual name, I don’t have to tell you what the hijacked word means nowadays!
I know.
I try not to use the word. As far as I’m concerned, they’re homosexuals, or f@gg0+$.
Faggots, 0h0m0s, it's all the same!
It won’t be long until the U.S.S. Alinsky is launched, or the U.S.S. Karl Marx?
That would be something!!!

Gays in the military will demand the “USS Bwaney Fwank”.You can bet that’s coming down the pike.
Tradition in ship USN naming got broke a long time ago...
USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42) 1945
USS Forrestal (CV-59) 1955
USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) 1968
USS William H. Bates (SSN-680) 1969
USS Glenard P. Lipscomb (SSN685) 1973
USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN-686) 1975
USS Richard B. Russell (SSN-687) 1975
These were all named after politicians years ago.
