JUBA, Sudan -Women broke out in song and men wrapped themselves in flags as voters in Southern Sudan began casting ballots Sunday in a weeklong independence referendum likely to create the world's newest nation about five years after the end of a brutal civil war.
The mainly Christian south is widely expected to secede from the mainly Muslim north, splitting Africa's largest country in two.
The president of Sudan, who has been indicted for alleged genocide and war crimes in Darfur, has promised to let go of the oil-rich south after his government tried for years to derail the vote now taking place under massive international scrutiny.
His unlikely acceptance of the seemingly inevitable loss comes as the two regions face an interwoven economic future: Most of Sudan's oil is in the south, while the pipelines to the sea run through the north. On Sunday, there was jubilation though among those who had lived through years of fighting.

Hallelujah! God Bless the people of South Sudan!
BUT——They must stay alert and aware because the Muslim dogs of war in Khartoum will not rest easily.
Khartoum will not give up this oil revenue.
Start sending guns and bullets.
Hopefully the fate of Khartoum will be the same as “Khartoum” in The Godfather.
Well if the North lets them succeed they had better arm up because just like the war of Northern aggression here in the US they won’t let it alone for long.
Khartoum will not give up this oil revenue
My understanding is that these matters have been and are being negotiated -—but that means nothing to the Muslims I agree. They tend not to keep agreements made with “infidels”.
After so many years of genocide, slavery, rape, oppression, the moment of freedom for the South has arrived. They will NOT suffer any more shenanigans easily.
Prayers up for them. I wish them well, but Ihope they know not to trust anything the mohammedans promise.
I know a small, triangle-shaped country that could use another ally.
Leaked cables claim Kenya sent tanks to South Sudan
Kenya was buying tanks from Ukraine and slipping them across the border to S. Sudan in violation of the arms embargo. The Bush administration gave it a wink and a nod. Everything was fine until Somali pirates hijacked the freighter full of tanks. The Obama administration, of course, did not want anyone selling arms to oppose the muslim butcher in N. Sudan.
Why do they keep trying arms embargos. An arms embargo ensures that might will make right. It was tried in Spain during its civil war, and the fascists won. It was tried in the Middle East from 1948 until 1961, and in spite of it, the Arab states were well-armed and aggressive, fighting two major wars against Israel, which no thanks to the Tripartite Declaration managed to survive and hold its own. Now they got the arms embargo bug again with regards to the Sudan? Idiots. If arms are embargoed, only thugs will have arms.
