Oprah Winfrey’s new cable network is having some early growing pains.
After exploding out of the gate in the ratings (and on a Saturday, no less), viewership for OWN has declined significantly.
While OWN’s premiere averaged 1 million primetime viewers last weekend, Sunday dropped to 822,000. Monday fell to 394,000, followed by Tuesday hitting 315,000. In the network’s target of women 25-54, OWN went from an opening night rating of 0.6 to a 0.2 at the start of the week.
Compared to other women’s networks, OWN was still remarkably competitive, though entrenched rivals like Oxygen and WE have mostly closed the gap (with Lifetime remaining out in front).
After heavy curiosity-driven tune-in, such a steep decline isn’t really all that surprising. Cable network have historically launched soft and quiet, gathering viewers and content gradually over a period of years. It’s OWN’s strong debut that remains truly unusual here, and proves there’s plenty of viewer interest in the channel.

The OWN network isn’t as interesting as people had hoped it owuld be. It will be airing a “reality” show about Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson and her struggles to make it through financial ruin. Does any one in America care about a bimbo from across the pond? If that is an indication of what OWN will be showing, Oprah’s net work will go the way of Air America.

Making the mistake of believing her own press releases, I predict her new business endeavor will fail. A man (or woman) has got to know his limitations.
LOL She misjudged her audience when she went from free TV to needing expanded cable.Those welfare queens were complkainging last week that they just could not afford to upgrade their cable just to see her.She probably cut her audience by about 30% with the move?
As I understand it, OWN is a joint venture between Discovery and Winfrey. She is not featured on every show (Thank the Lord) so ratings will be the result of good programming and new ideas.
Often, the problem for niche channels is too many copy-cat shows - resulting in overload and then fade-out.
Remember the ‘housing’ shows when real-estate was on the rise? Trading spaces, DYI, Sell this House, Flip this House, ad nauseum.
Then along came ‘Clean House’, Hoarders and Buried Alive.
The current fad is ‘Pawn Stars’, & American Pickers on the History Channel. Already copy cats have shown up.
Cooking shows seem to have exploded in popularity too.
