The Maine senator collected kudos from President Obama for her role in moving the controversial legislation forward.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins was the only Republican on the stage for yesterday's signing of the bill repealing the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy on gays in the military, and one of only two Republicans at the ceremony.

Collins, who played a major role in moving the legislation forward, collected kudos from President Obama. "I want to thank Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins," he said, to cheers from the attendees.

Collins says there was no reason for the U.S. military to continue banning gays. "Great Britain, Australia, the Israelis--some 28 countries allow openly gay and lesbian men and women to serve."

Collins says it will take some time to implement the change, but she says it is needed.

Agreed. IMHO is far worse to elect a RINO to the Senate than just go straight up with a RAT. At least we know RATS will most always vote the way the party and the Kenyan tells them to vote. Collins and Snow have continued to be elected because they have been able to bring the bacon home to Maine. This was possible while their vote was needed by both sides. With the House now firmly in Republican control and with increased Republican numbers in the Senate, their votes are no longer needed by either the Republicans or the Democrats. No more special deals in exchange for their votes. All Maine pork should be cut off and they should be left to wither on the vine.
