By John Reed Monday, December 20th, 2010 5:26 pm Posted in Air, International, Naval The U.S. Navys next-generation electromagnetic catapult performed its first ever live aircraft launch on Saturday when an F/A-18E Super Hornet was shot from the system at the Navys Lakehurst Air Engineering Station in New Jersey.
This marks the first time that a Navy plane has been launched by anything other than a steam catapult in over half a century.
Today we answered the question will EMALS work, said Kathleen Donnelly, Director for Support Equipment and Aircraft Launch and Recovery at Lakehurst. Now well work toward answering the question, will EMALS be reliable?

Seems a bit over-teched for today’s planes. Maybe in the future with much heavier aircraft it will be practical.

Its designed for the Gerald Ford class (CVN78).

What's your weight threshold to justify EMALs?
You go ahead and stick with steam cats and all of their associated problems.

I have it from a reliable source that they make a good heat
source to distill homemade booze.

It's not just the weight. Each aircraft requires a desired speed at the end of the cat stroke.
Because EMALS is much smoother it should also be easier on the aircraft, possibly making available even higher launch weights.
Just think of all the extra steam the ship will be able to divert into the cake dryer.

Power from the EMALS generator can be used to launch hypersonic guided missiles...world wide strike capacity in minutes....
Kinetic warhead same energy as a small nuke.

I hope they are smart enough to protect it and the controlling equipment from EMP.

You'll never guess who pioneered this technology:
Disney. A few years ago Walt Disney Imagineering was looking to find a way to make a rollercoaster that took up less space. The answer was replacing that first big hill(and the space it took up) with an electromagnetic launch system. It launced a fully loaded set of cars from 0 to 60 Mph in 4 seconds. The two Disney coasters that use this system are "Aerosmith's rockin rollercoaster" in Orlando and "California screamin' " in Anaheim.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
