Graham: DREAM Act push damaged wider immigration reform effort (RINO planned amnesty push in 2011)
The Hill, Washington, DC ^ | 2010-12-18 | Ben Geman

Posted on 12/18/2010 2:57:27 PM PST by rabscuttle385

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Saturday that the failed Democratic effort to pass the DREAM Act in the lame duck session dealt a blow to future talks on a wider immigration bill.

“It was an exercise to try and taint Republicans with Hispanic voters, knowing that the DREAM Act under these circumstances could never pass,” Graham told reporters in the Capitol after the bill sputtered on the floor.

“What they have done on the DREAM Act is hurt overall comprehensive immigration reform,” he said.

The DREAM Act, which would give legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the country at a young age, lived here for at least five years, graduated from high school and attended college or served in the military, fell five votes short of the 60 needed to overcome a GOP-led filibuster — 55 to 41.

Graham has worked with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in the past to try and seek a Capitol Hill compromise on a wider reform plan -- one that would blend increased enforcement and border security with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, among other measures.

He said the DREAM Act effort will make it harder to bridge divides on immigration, noting the impassioned advocacy on both sides of the issue.

“Our base is all riled up that this is amnesty, so you have taken a debate on immigration, one part of it, you have gotten people emotional before you can sit down and reason your way through a comprehensive bill,” Graham said. “Doing this vote the way they did it has hurt the ability to do comprehensive reform next year to some extent.”

A path to citizenship? Is this something new? Don't we already have a path to citizenship right here?

Focus on getting AMERICANS back to work and screw trying to get illegals legal, they have no desire to become Americans, focus are allowing immigrants into the Country who want to become Americans.

Indeed..the field is looking clear for E-Verify.No doubt part of the impassioned push by the biz & ethnic-commie lobby for DREAM ACT.The recent SCOTUS decision hearing and court makeup is not lost on them. That’s why I set up a petition drive for Houston-2012 E-Verify. Visit www.stopthemagnet.com

Amen. I have thought of this many times.

This would expose the inherent hypocrisy of liberal-thiking(mostly white)amnesty supporters. Enough of this insulated “view from the terrace”.

So, rabs, you in the past have supported Libertarian candidates, who in turn often support open immigration policies. How do you reconcile that with your stance here?

I’ll be glad when someone notices jihadis will be coming into this country and citizenship as well. I’m sure the grandfathering clause is still there as well.

I guess the State Dept. is swamped from handing out all those visas to banned individuals and their ilk.

Meanwhile, at the McCain complex in Arizona, John and Lyndsey are sitting watching another gladiator movie:

John: "You know, Lyns, it doesn't get any better than this!"
Lyndsey: "I know what ya mean, John [hugs]. But what about comprehensive immigration reform?"
John: "It's the most important thing, Lyns! These hard-working migrant folks are only doing the jobs Americans wont do!"
[knock on the door]: "Excuse me, Señor McCain, I washed and waxed your car and mowed the grass."
John: "Oh! He he. Here's a twenty Pedro! Keep the change!"
[illegal] "Gracias, Señor McCain!"

I’m assuming you don’t live in the southwest, so you haven’t seen the destruction that illegals have wrought. Also the other immigrant groups weren’t taught that this country was “stolen” from them.

I think it’s important to distinguish Democratic Party politics from the status of being an illegal immigrant. Dem identity politics have virtually destroyed blacks and now they’re working on destroying Latin Americans.

But we have to do something to solve this problem. Just hoping it will go away only allows the Dems to take over the whole issue and get all illegals (not only Latin Americans, but the hordes of illegal immigrants from ME Muslim and African Muslim countries) wholesale legalized.

So people have to present a plan. I think short term visas with a long-term possibility (and application for citizenship for those who wanted it and qualified for it) would be the best option. I live in the South, and the vast majority of Latin American illegals are here to work, send money back to their home countries, and then go back there themselves when they have accumulated a nest egg. I think a lot of Latin Americans (depending on whether or not their country has been taken over by a leftist dictator such as Hugo Chavez), want to go home after they’ve gotten some money, but they can’t legally do that now. So make it possible for them.

Also, part of the legal Latin American quota has been taken away and given to people from traditionally Muslim countries. Bambi has increased LEGAL Muslim immigration by 80%, simply through administrative orders. Personally, I don’t think we need ANY Muslim immigrants. And I’d much rather have Latin Americans than have the US fill up with Muslims. I’ll never forget seeing the former Houston Federal Courthouse with a banner hanging over it proclaiming it the new “Muslim Dawa Center.” Dawa means proseltysing.

Mark my words: St. Sarah will campaign for McLame’s BFF in 2014. -----------------------------------------------------------
That is what I am afraid of. Even Jim DeMint backed Graham in the 2008 primary.

Wouldn't surprise me since she is already on record as being against deportation and for 'a pathway to citizenship'.

Funny how you don't mention how this defeat of the Dream Act amnesty was a great victory nor how Republicans in the Senate stopped this Dream act as only 3 Republican Senators voted for the Dream . You'll use the actions of those 3 to slander the whole Republican party and all Republicans. Yeah RINOS are a problem and they should be primaried but it is unfair to blame all Republicans. And that you are not giving credit to Republicans when they did the right thing to defend America tells me a lot. Voting percentages were similar in other horrible bills like the Amnesty of a few years ago with close to 90% of Republicans voting the right way, close to 90% of Democrats voting the wrong way for socialism and for amnesty. But from that you say the threat is the Republican party which is wrong . The threat is the democrat party.

A 'pathway to citizenship', like 'immigration reform' is code for amnesty.

I never blamed the entire Republican Party. This thread was solely about Lindsey Graham and John McCain.

And that you are not giving credit to Republicans when they did the right thing to defend America tells me a lot...

Off topic much?

other horrible bills like the Amnesty of a few years ago

Like the multiple incarnations of McCain-Kennedy which were championed by the head of the Republican Party, one George W. Bush?

you say the threat is the Republican party which is wrong . The threat is the democrat party.

RINOs helping liberal Democrats are just as big a threat as liberal Democrats for a number of reasons. One, they are liberals, and two, gullible Republicans are dumb enough to keep re-electing them, if only for the idiotic and non-sensical cry of "Republicans are always better than Democrats."

I’d be happy to legalize lots of Latin Americans (who actually do work and are no different from all the other poor immigrant groups - Irish, Italians, Germans and Eastern European Jews - who arrived here, learned English in the second generation, and rose to the top by the third generation...

Actually, there is a huge difference. It's called respecting our laws and entering the country legally - which is what the earlier immigrant groups did.

Latin Americans don’t want to change the US

Really? then you haven't spent any time in the invaded border states. They look no different than a 3rd world cesspool in the parts the illegals have taken over. And if you think they are bothering to learn English and get their children educated, you best look at the statistics on that. Which I won't waste my time googling or posting, because your pro-illegal mind is already made up.

Worse. Democrats display their intentions quite openly. RINOs take turns amongst themselves selling us out, the core of the opposition to the allegedly Dem agenda. We see it more regularly in the Senate because of the super-majorities needed for cloture, but it happens in the House as well.

I said "allegedly Dem agenda" because it's really a progressively Statist agenda. Never forget that the Progressive dis-constitutional, power-mad, Sophistic-republican elitist movement began in the GOP. (There, that's one way to describe them -- and I haven't exhausted my vocabulary yet.)

The RINOs are so duplicitous in their actions that it is hard not to conclude that the RINOs are the brains behind it all.

Isn't it true that all of you together would be hard pressed to find any display of Democratic brains in the last decade? So why would anyone not conclude that whatever brains that has grown government so much MUST be coming from the RINOS? And that would explain the growth under GWB and the passing of DADT with so many "RINO" votes even after the elections. Very few people considered this to be so important it had to be passed in the lame duck. It has to be coming from institutional rot. This stinking fish rots from the head down. Again, the Dems lack brains, so it must be the RINOs.

We need to deport or imprison ALL illegal aliens, including their anchor babies, seal/secure the border with a fence and wall, and have a lethal response to anyone who tries to re-enter illegally.

Here ‘s a clue :this is a 2 party system.

Which do you support? If you don't vote and support Republicans then you help democrats/marxists.So you are supporting democrats that way and you also help democrats by constantly bashing Republicans and fools that call themselves Republicans, all to ruin the brand name of Republican.

You are doing to Republicans what the liberal mainstream media does to Palin and Republicans. The media blasts one erroneous little thing Palin said all over a trillion times. This is to hurt Palin generally. So you concentrate on a few liberal individual idiots who call themselves Republicans when that is not most Republicans.

Republicans never had a super majority in Congress and a conservative President so you can't blame Republicans.

Republicans only had a simple majority in Congress from 1994 to 2006. Now you pile only all the government agencies Republicans created in that time period and you have hardly any government certainly not the 3.4 trillion budget.

You try to blame Bush. Here's another clue Bush is not in power and he is ONE individual. You say the same thing the liberals say about Bush and Republicans. You, liberals, and the liberal media agree in that Bush and Republicans are to blame for everything or a lot of problems. Bush doesn't speak for Republicans like Palin, Pence, Coburn, Sessions, Demint , me , etc.

Republicans stopped the Dream act.

Why don't you bash Democrats? Democrats are in power and are destroying the U.S. and freedom. Democrats had a super majority yet you constantly blame Republicans. Democrats in Congress are all socialists/marxists. All democrats are for Amnesty and growing government especially the elected ones.

If it weren't for the 2 conservative justices Bush and Republicans put in the Supreme Court we wouldn't have freedom now and we would have Amnesty for illegals and this country would be destroyed. Those are facts none of you constant bashers of the GOP, you can't deny.

Get a grip. The Republican brand name was already worthless to begin with, else there'd be no reason for a Tea Party.
