Woodbridge clerk becomes robbers' worst nightmare(PA)

WOODBRIDGE, Va. --

It was a gas station employee’s worst nightmare, being grabbed by two men after closing up shop for the night.

But it turned out the clerk at the Gordon Boulevard Shell station near Occoquan Saturday night was the nightmare for a pair of would-be muggers.

After locking the doors for the night around 11 p.m., the clerk -- who requested his name not be used since his attackers haven't been captured -- turned his car on to warm it up. While he sat in the driver’s seat, he made a phone call.

That’s when two men opened the door and grabbed him, simultaneously zapping him on his left forearm with a stun gun.

“I was wearing a thick coat,” the 29-year-old clerk said Tuesday afternoon, “so I didn’t get the full effect of the stun gun. It was just moments and I had to react and I realized ‘I better defend myself.’”

A concealed weapons permit holder, the clerk quickly turned the tables on the men, pulling out his handgun and firing twice at the muggers.

“I’ve been carrying it for at least four years,” he said of his gun. “I fired two shots while saying ‘Get out of here. Get out of here.’ I took two shots and they took off.

“It’s not been confirmed, but I’m sure I hit one with at least one shot.”

The clerk said he was likely less than a foot away from the men when he discharged his weapon.

Station owner Leon Tynes, who has worked at the location for more than 20 years, said this is the first time an employee has ever been attacked there.

“Other than break-ins or burglaries,” Tynes said, “it was the first of that.”

The Second Amendment at work. Citizens protecting themselves from lawless thugs. It’s great to hear that the “good guy” won.

At the time of his arrest, Johnson, 34, did have a gunshot wound in his leg, which did not require medical treatment, Perok said.

Nice job defending himself, but more range time is needed.

I think I missed the connection to PA...this took place in Woodbridge, VA (a suburb of DC). I live near there. Was one of the thugs from PA?

Anyway, as a side note to any locals...I just noticed on the link to the article that there is a Gun Show today in Dale City at the VFW. Great advertising! I know where I will be this afternoon. :)

I do most of my driving/stopping at night during the winter.

1. Be alert to your surroundings at all times. You are at your most vulnerable while getting into your car.
2. Get in and LOCK THE DOOR.
3. Have your concealed weapon in your hand when you do it. If they point a gun through the window, fire immediately. Studies show that the sooner you take action the better your odds are.
4. Start your engine and drive away. Warming up is nice. Making it home alive is nicer.

How do you miss at less than 1 foot distance? Was he holding the gun backwards?

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

I thought the same but under stress strange things can happen. Years ago I almost stepped on a large water moccasin in some high grass by the river. I had a 22 in my hand with a 9 round clip. I unloaded the clip, missing with the first 8 and he dashed into the 9th while trying to get back to the water. I couldn't imagine how I missed that large snake that was right at my feet. I'm glad I didn't shoot my feet off.

The stress, EXTREME close quarters, and being shocked with a stun-gun were likely all factors.
