Vt. gov.-elect makes health care team appointments

Associated Press / December 13, 2010

MONTPELIER, Vt.—Gov.-elect Peter Shumlin on Monday announced his appointments to a team he hopes will lead Vermont to become the first state with a single-payer health care system.

The Democrat had made that goal the centerpiece of his campaign even under criticism that it would be difficult to achieve given limits placed on states under President Barack Obama's signature health care legislation passed by Congress earlier this year.

Shumlin said his goal was to "provide (health care) access to all Vermonters, contain costs and hopefully design a system where health care follows the individual and is not an obligation of the employer, where health care is a right and not a privilege."

He acknowledged that he might not succeed and listed one of his challenges as the need for special federal permissions, or waivers, to accomplish the state plan.

"This is a complex undertaking," Shumlin said. "It will require careful planning at the state level and pushing the limits of laws and regulations at the federal level."

Place your bets - who in Vermont will be exempt from this form of Commiecare™? My guess starts with RAT Shumlin and anyone he appoints.

What a commie freak. People get what they vote for. I’m staying away from Vermont for vacations. I don’t want to support such blatant idiocy.

Seriously, this is VERY easy for him to do. Create an optional plan for ANYONE in the state to get any healthcare they want paid for by the state. Anyone who does not want the benefit does not have to use it. Raise taxes on EVERYONE to pay for it.

I'm not recommending it, but it would be easy for a Dim to implement. I don't see why any waivers would be needed. The state provides coverage for many people now (indigent, low income, etc.) Lower the restrictions on those programs to allow everyone to qualify.

I think I might open a little boarding house where people from other states can come, live and partake of VT health care.

So if I go to VT, wear a sombrero and say ‘si’ and ‘no’ a lot in order to get a VT driver’s license, can I then get VT healthcare?
