Twenty-one Oxbridge colleges took no black students last year
Guardian ^ | December 6th 2010 | Jeevan Vasagar

A bleak portrait of racial and social exclusion at Oxford and Cambridge has been shown in official data which shows that more than 20 Oxbridge colleges made no offers to black candidates for undergraduate courses last year and one Oxford college has not admitted a single black student in five years.

The university's admissions data confirms that only one black Briton of Caribbean descent was accepted for undergraduate study at Oxford last year.

Figures revealed in requests made under the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act by the Labour MP David Lammy also show that Oxford's social profile is 89% upper- and middle-class, while 87.6% of the Cambridge student body is drawn from the top three socioeconomic groups. The average for British universities is 64.5%, according to the admissions body Ucas.

The FoI data also shows that of more than 1,500 academic and lab staff at Cambridge, none are black. Thirty-four are of British Asian origin.

One Oxford college, Merton, has admitted no black students in five years – and just three in the last decade. Eleven Oxford colleges and 10 Cambridge colleges made no offers to black students for the academic year beginning autumn 2009.

Oxford's breakdown of its latest undergraduate admissions figures, published on its website, shows that just one black Caribbean student was accepted in 2009, out of 35 applications.

A total of 77 students of Indian descent were accepted, out of 466 applications. Six black Caribbean undergraduates were accepted at Cambridge the same year.

In advance of a crucial Commons vote on Thursday, ministers have said universities that want to charge students up to £9,000 a year in fees will face fresh targets on widening access to applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Means little in the absence of data showing the number of minority applications to these colleges and their academic records.

Yeah, yeah. But “Asian” is Limey talk for “moslem”. So the sun has truly set on the Empire...

Fancy that. The funny thing is, both Oxford and Cambridge are brimming with supercilious left wingers who sneer at the barbaric racist Americans.

I am not in favor of affirmative action, but I am in favor of strict racial equality and the active recruitment of qualified students from atypical backgrounds.

I have also known a few people of Caribbean and native African background, and know that in general they take the education of their children far more seriously than American-born blacks do.

It seems inconceivable that there has not been a single qualified black applicant to Merron College in five years. This is worthy of a review of their admissions office.

Untrue. “Asian” is Britspeak for people from the Indian subcontinent, so includes a substantial number of Hindus (probably about half of them).

Uh, Myron Rolle, Florida State defensive back, went to Oxford last year (2009). He would have been drafted in the NFL, but chose Oxford instead. And, the last time I checked, he’s black.

Can’t wait to see what the Guardianistas have to say about this one!

From the comments section:

“I’m black and applied for Law at Oxford this year. Got 5 As at AS level, near-perfect predictions far beyond what they ask for and pretty nifty GCSE grades too. Didn’t even get an interview and everyone thought there was something smelly in the water. They never told me why I wasn’t good enough. I would be very worried for the future and direction of our society if this is why.

I believe the article dwells on undergraduate students. Rolle would be doing graduate work, as a Rhodes Scholar.

The more important aspect of this article is the fact that the social(ist) engineers will okay the fee hikes if it means more affirmative action.

Basically the haves paying for the have nots.

They should LOWER fees for everyone and more people could afford to go while paying their OWN way!

Total BS. I’ve been to both Oxford and Cambridge. My daughter attended Cambridge. There are British students from all the former colonies. They have many different skin tones. They are from all over the world. Total nonsense. On the other hand, excluding muslims would be an excellent idea!

This behavior goes beyond the pale

Well, if most of the applicants were not gentlemen (or ladies), why ever should they be seriously considered? Can non-U speakers really expect to gain a place? If they were serious about the Ancient Universities -- they do seem more successful in getting into red brick -- then they should have attended respectable public schools. Then Hon. Nancy Mitford would be turning in her grave if more unsuitable persons were admitted.

Come on everyone, the answer is obvious. It starts with an “R” and ends with an “ISM”.

Ditto. How many white students from the Transvaal did they take? Does the answer prove anything? No.

Untrue. “Asian” also includes Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as Iran. . .muslum.

Indeed.

The article is unclear, as it says no “Blacks” were admitted (opening paragraph), but yet, the next paragraph talks about “only one black Briton of CARIBBEAN descent.”

Deceptive, as the article is not addressing Blacks of direct African decent.

Guardian, all left-wing lies all the time.
