New Delhi - French President Nicolas Sarkozy prayed for success Sunday while his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy wished for a son, during a visit to the shrine of a Sufi saint in India.
Sarkozy had told officials organising his trip that he wanted to spend time at the shrine of Sufi saint Salim Chisti in the walled city of Fatehpur Sikri, near Agra.

Any ol’ religion will do—sad. I pray they turn from false gods and to the One and only Living God.
Idolatry.
Sarkosy is still in India?
He must be working overtime on an arms deal
this fact is something everyone should know.
Sufis are spin-off :D
it’s also possible Sarkosy is doing this for muzzie public appeasement after the veil ban
Some believe Sufism predates Islam.
you didn’t get the Sufi joke yet did you?
What did we do to Dervish that pun?
Finally. Thanks to you. It’s about time to take up reading about Sufism again. I’ve got a bunch of books around here someplace.
Sometimes I need to be hit over the head.
“A donkey with a load of holy books is still a donkey” -trad.sufism
“Whatever you have in mind forget it” -Abu Said, essential sufism
when you get there let me know i’m always open to dialogue

A rough rule of thumb is that Sufism is to Islam, as Zen is to Buddhism.
In other words, it's a rejection-reaction to the bureuacraticization of the religion, in order to slough off the "indulgence selling" corruption and get back to the fundamental roots underneath the "hyper-regulatory religious administration."
Not that the efforts totally worked, historically speaking (you always pick up a little of what you're trying to get away from). But that was their basic intent, at least originally.
And interestingly, both Sufism and Zen have terrific spiritual poetry traditions, FWIW.
I hadn’t considered that aspect. I can see why Islamic authorities viewed them as heretics. I’ve always thought that in a way Sufism is to Islam as the Kabbalah is to Judaism. I’ve read some of the poetry.
I’ve also read some of Idries Shah’s books. I found it interesting that he took the time to write that Gurdjieff’s teachings were OK for that time and period but were a dead end later on. I never finished Gurdjieff’s Beelzebub’s Tales To His Grandson.
Shoulda attended a Qawwali performance too.
