WESTON, MO. — People in Weston, Missouri banded together on Saturday. They wanted to protect loved ones who were saying goodbye to a fallen soldier and stood up to members of the Westboro Baptist Church who planned to protest at Sgt. First Class C.J. Sadell's funeral.

Sadell died October 24 from injuries he suffered in a surprise attack in Afghanistan. On Saturday, there was quite a turnout of people who wanted to keep the protesters away from the funeral.

"I'd say probably half the people in Weston are here," said Eric Moser, Marine Corp veteran.

Weston has less than 2,000 residents, and hundreds of people showed up to support the family of First Sgt. Sadell.

Sadell was in the Arif Kala region of Afghanistan when his unit was ambushed October 5. Five soldiers died and Sadell was badly injured.

"If you think about it, they've all gone to serve just so we could be able to do this," said Rebecca Rooney who organized the supporters. "He didn't die in vain."

Rebecca Rooney is a Weston resident who wanted to stand up against Fred Phelps and his followers.

"We got everybody here early so we could take up all the parking spots," Rooney said. "We did that so Mr. Phelps wouldn't have a contingency that was really close."

Supporters came armed with patriotic music and American flags. The protesters didn't stick around long once they saw the supporters.

"I'm glad they left, but I'm sad they came," Rooney said.

People came from Blue Springs, California and even Australia to be a part of the band of patriotic supporters. Half of the group lined up at the intersection while the the other half created a human shield at the funeral home.

C.J. Sadell was 34-years-old. He leaves behind a wife and two sons.

Weston is a beautiful place. There's a great, scenic bike ride from Kansas City to St Joseph that goes through Weston Bend State Park. It's right on the (Missouri) river, and there's a great view.

I remember back when there was that mine disaster in West Va.?(I think it was there) in which only a young miner survived. In any event these Westboro slugs were planning a protest at the miners funeral. I remember hearing on Hannitys program I think it was , from a woman who’s
husbands family lived in the town where the tragedy occurred. The woman said “If them people come down here, some bodys gonna get kilt’’(killed). Bullies always punk out when they’re stood up to. The Westboro folks might get away with outrageousness elsewhere but once they saw the was the possiblity of ending up full of holes didn’t appeal to them.

Weston is indeed a beautiful spot. Site of the westernmost tobacco auction, the furthest finger of that industry in old Missouri. Apple orchards and rolling hills to the bluffs of the Mighty Mo.

The Westboro “Baptist” Church is out of Topeka. Curiously, one of the early elections in Kansas (trying to select a capital, or whether to come in as a free state or slave, don’t recall which at present) was held in Topeka. More people voted than were residents at the time. Most of the “extras” came across the river from Platte City and Weston.

Kris Kobach are you listening?

Heh...glad you changed your statement a bit from earlier (could not respond to that - too violent)...

Yes, just rebuttal against the stupid party is the best antidote!

I went to high school with Rebecca Rooney many years and many miles ago, and am Facebook friends with her now. Her page has multiple photographs from this day - they formed a blockade of people with flags, and played loud patriotic music, to make sure the family didn’t catch a glimpse or a sound of the protestors. So proud of the people of Weston, and elsewhere, and the Patriot Guard for protecting this family and honouring this soldier.

Until “Pastor” Phelps and all those “brave souls” drinking his kool-aid walk a mile in a soldier’s shoes, they have no business putting their whiny little snotty noses in his/her family’s face. If you remember, “Reverend”, you and your ilk exercised your “right” to run to Canada. Why the hell didn’t you stay there?

The pics of Rebecca are from a samsung propel cell phone - not bad for a cell phone! Westboro didn’t stand a chance - too many loud Harley’s were prepared to ride circles around them.

Rebecca is also the secretary for the Platte County Republican central committee. Her husband is the chair. All their 8 candidates won on Nov 3rd. IT was a sweep of historic proportions.

He did not stay in Canada because “Pastor” Phelps is a whore and he knew that he would not get ANY coverage of his perversion of Christianity in the middle of moose county.

I shudder to think of that man in the hands of a just and righteous God.

Time to stand-up...whether it be Tuns’ Tavern, or the internet.

Happy Birthday!

How hard can it be that you can't pass a constitutional amendment that says you cannot be protesting within two miles of anybody funeral?

The Constitution says I can bring an S&W 9MM to a wedding or a funeral. Who needs an amendment?

God bless the folks that did this. Wish I was a part of it. Sad we have to go to such extremes from a heretical Christian psuedo-christian church. God bless the soldier(s0 who have fought for our freedom, and their family and frends that DESERVE respect and time to bury their own IN PEACE!
