Tom Tancredo Goes Down
Time ^ | 11/2/10 | Kate Pickett

The Denver Post called it the most bizarre gubernatorial campaign in state history. Indeed.

In the end, Democrat John Hickenlooper, mayor of Denver, cruised to victory with a large margin. But it all could have gone very differently.

Republican Dan Maes' campaign was a complete disaster. After knocking of the GOP favorite Scot McInnis, who became mired in a plaigarism scandal, Maes is on track to earn less than 10% of the vote, which would hand the GOP "minority party status" in upcoming elections. This would kick the Republican Party lower on subsequent ballots, relegating it to the land of the Green and Libertarian parties. Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo appeared to be filling the void in recent weeks, even earning a last-minute endorsement from Sarah Palin. Tancredo, known for his fierce opposition to illegal immigration, appeared - in a way - to be riding a wave of voter anger sweeping the country this year.

Tom Tancredo is all about Tom Tancredo. His ego is Obamesque. That being said, Maes would likely have lost anyway. Another unvetted mess of a candidate.

And splitting the vote let the Hick skate in.

It's pretty close when you add Maes and Tancredo together @ 42% of the vote counted. The ChickenLooper may lose in the combined vote.

A - COLORADO GOVERNOR -- 1,372 of 3,246 precincts reporting (42%)

John Hickenlooper [D] 563,196 51% (X)
Tom Tancredo [AC] 409,470 37%
Dan Maes [R] 122,132 11%

Tancredo gave me some hope and someone to vote for. He did an incredible job given the odds. Little money compared to Hickenlooper. Little time. Running on a third party ticket. Being run down by both Dems and Repubs. Maes siphoning off some votes. I’m glad he had the courage to get in and I’d vote for him again.

I was just about to post those numbers. Thanks.
They still have to count quite a few more precincts.

I was hoping the people of Colorado would unite and stop the illegals, this was their chance.

Me too, beaversmom, but tonight I'm so angry at Maes voters I can't see straight. The Dems who voted for the Looper are just being the twits they are. They can't help themselves. But Maes voters may have handed Loop the win. The last I saw, El Paso County had voted 18 percent for Maes. Just insane. They KNEW their vote for Maes was a vote for Looper, but they did it anyway. What's happened to this state?

And we can look forward to a Colorado following the same path to decline as California. Swarming with illegal aliens, not making sensible use of the resources it was blessed with, and probably looking to stick it to the productive to subsidize the multiplication of the unproductive (natural born Democrats) as revenue goes negative.

The more I see of him, and the more I hear from him, the more I like Tom. I like the guy. I’m disappointed he didn’t do better. People had the chance to choose a decent, stand-up guy and they didn’t.

This isn’t a one-shot deal, this isn’t a one-election war. We’re all in this for the long haul.

About 20+ Dem rat Senators are on the firing line in 2 years and a few RINOs are too. It’s a process of knocking them off.

We had a good group of people there. Tom gave a good concession speech and told us that our work was not at an end.

Glad you got to go. I was considering going to it and/or the Repub one, but just didn’t have enough time with it being a school night/Boy Scout night. Heard a little bit of Tancredo on 850 KOA. Thought it would be a lot closer. Still so glad he jumped in.

A caller originally from NY called into Michael Brown (you’re doing a heckuva job Brownie) on 850 KOA tonight. He said he would like to get a some cinder blocks and chains and take Maes to see the Edumund Fitzgerald with Hugh Hewitt as the tour guide. I had to laugh.

I guess there was a pocket of support for Maes in that county. I kept hearing that from various sources. I’ll forever think of Maes as a POS. He could have done the right thing, but he refused. I guess his supporters will be happy with Hickenlooper.

Maes gave this election to Hick...he knew what he was doing all along. I bet he has a nice bag of cash courtesy of the DNC. He refused to concede. That 11% he wound up with...cost Tanc.
