Hazleton police cruisers escorted a caravan of sport utility vehicles with whom Dominican Revolutionary Party leaders are calling the next president of the Dominican Republic along North Wyoming Street late Saturday morning.
Miguel Vargas Maldonado, the party's president and candidate for the Dominican Republic's highest office, made several stops in Hazleton to talk to his fellow citizens, encouraging them to vote for him and the change he plans to bring to their country.
The caravan crawled through town, stopping on Wyoming Street between Maple and Green streets, where Maldonado and those in his entourage got out of their vehicles and greeted people, who spilled out of businesses and homes and into the street to meet him.
The throng of people slowly made its way to Broad and Wyoming streets for another stop at Dominican Revolutionary Party's Hazleton headquarters, where people crowded to hear Maldonado speak.
"We are here to say, 'Hello,' to the Dominican people," Maldonado said through a translator, adding that he will represent all Dominicans. "We will work with the people - the Dominicans here and the Dominicans in the Dominican Republic."
Maldonado also said he will work to aid Dominicans living abroad.
"That's why we say to the residents outside the Dominican Republic, the residents of Hazleton, that they have to participate in this type of rally and to remember that he's working to give the best life for each one of the people around here," Maldonado's translator said on behalf of the candidate.
Following the stop at the party's headquarters, Maldonado and other party leaders walked to the Crystal Barbecue Restaurant and Lounge on East Broad Street for a luncheon attended by more than 60 people.
A change in the country's constitution allows Dominican citizens living abroad to vote for president, said Victor O. Gomez Casanova, press secretary. Hazleton was an important stop because of the concentration of Dominicans living here, he explained.
Maldonado arrived in the United States on Wednesday and already has made 23 visits as he works his way across the country, Casanova said. Allentown and Philadelphia were among his other stops for Saturday.
The Dominican Republic's primary election is in March, and the election is May 20, 2012. Those wishing to participate in the elections need to visit the Consulate General office in Philadelphia with a card and code number to vote, Casanova said. Those born in the Dominican Republic do not have to register, as they should already be registered, he said.

luncheon attended by more than 60 people - Rivaling Bill Clinton’s Detroit gathering.
Why the hell aren’t they back in their own country, dealing with (i.e. fixing) the problems that drove these people here, in the first place???? Must have heard about the free lunch.
Our country is in debt up to its eyeballs but our corrupt politicians won’t even discuss cutting billions wasted on illegal aliens. They will raise our taxes and cut aid to senior citizens before they cut off people who don’t belong here. The productive citizens will be bled more and more until there’s nothing left.

Isn’t this the district that Barletta is running for?
I hope he can pull it out and that area of PA will have a congressman who will vote to force the immigration laws.
Another socialist who believes in "redistributing the wealth".
Yes. Barletta is currently Mayor of Hazleton.
Alas, because its easier to take our stuff by force at the ballot box. The left has spent the last 50 years making this possible.
Of course, in the end, the Latino community will be just as relentlessly destroyed as the black community has been. Both groups are just tools being used for the left's larger dream of destroying this country.
On the other hand, there is probably a lot o good shortstops in Hazelton these days.
Dominican presidential candidate tours the US........here to protect his cut of the tax-free bucks pocketed by his countrymen riding the US gravy train .......... that they wire back home.

For almost twenty years, Barletta and the mayor who preceded him turned a blind eye to the invaders of Hazleton.
That plan he came up with a few years back, that Illegal Immigration Relief Act, was Save Our State’s work that had already been shot down in court.
Barletta saw an opportunity to grandstand his way to national prominence and took it.
How did a former white house staff member phrase it? Never let a crises go to waste?
Barletta must have read that book, too.
Thanks MurrietaMadman.
