History lesson: Why Jerry Brown is called 'Moonbeam'
Los Angeles Times ^ | 10/25/10 | Lori Kozlowski

Posted on 10/25/2010 12:59:20 PM PDT by Nachum

In 1976, a Chicago newspaper columnist wrote that Jerry Brown would get "the moonbeam vote."The writer was Mike Royko, who then started referring to the then-38-year-old Brown as "Gov. Moonbeam." Royko was suggesting that Brown was attracting California's New Age crowd. Brown was a strong supporter of space exploration and many of the earliest statewide green initiatives. Yet he also gained a reputation as a fiscal conservative, refusing many perks that came with the governorship.Royko eventually retracted his statement, and in 1991 in the Chicago Tribune, he called the moniker "null, void and deceased."

The name that stuck for me was “Lord of the Flies”. He was a proponent on natural insect control, rather than use malathion. As a result, CA almost lost its citrus industry because of JB Jr.

Mike Royko. Ah...h! Now, that was one funny guy. Google the Cook County Coroner from years gone by, you spend a few moments laughing hard and wiping the tears from your eyes. We clipped it out years and years ago. It's yellowed with age and we read it once in a while when we need a good hard laugh. God bless him wherever he is. Laughter is very good medicine.

Millions of illegals, millions of unassimilated immigrants from around the world, and every other state’s fruits and nuts shipped here for 50 years - this is the result. They’ve ruined the greatest state in the union.

Wow Mike Royko - I had forgotten there was actually a time when Dems had columnists that actually wrote anything worth reading.

It is a mistake to call Jerry Brown “Moonbeam”.

It makes him sound like a well-intended, if goofy, hippie.

Brown, in fact, is a vicious, evil, corrupt, lying ideologue bent on destruction.

Better we should call him “Manson”.

if jerry brown wins that election, you may as well build a fence around the entire state and sell tickets to the world’s largest amusement park.

The meaning of ‘moonbeam’, when applied to Jerry Brown, has changed since 1976. The change in meaning has come about based on his actions in general.

It now implies both ‘nutcase’ and ‘60s child’

And no one will make the mistake of thinking he is a fiscal conservative, except for a meaningless display of campaign spending from the past.

I love how he’s trying to take credit for a tax cut that came as a result of a ballot initiative he opposed while he was governor...

Brown was the governor who signed legislation allowing public employees to unionize and get collective bargaining agreements. Look at how that worked out. I also beleive that he was the governor who got rid of the requirement for proof of identity when registering to vote. Most of the people in California today do not remember how bad he was. He was the second worst governor in California history.

AND NOW THE TRUTH:
ROYKO picked up on the nickname from Brown’s GIRLFRIEND at the time, LINDA RONSTADT, who was quoted in a 1978 Rolling Stone magazine interview humorously calling him “Moonbeam”.

The name stuck because it fit him. I don’t think many people knew where it came from back then, but when they heard it they knew it was him.
