As congressional candidate Karen Harrington was on her way to a campaign event, she witnessed a rollover car crash – and came to the aid of the victims, pulling a young child from an overturned SUV.
The incident happened Saturday in Weston, as Harrington was headed from her Davie campaign headquarters to greet golfers coming off the course at Weston Hills Country Club.
Waiting for a traffic light at Indian Trace and Catalina Drive, she saw the crash that sent Wendy Breslow’s Acura MDX sport utility vehicle rolling over. “She rolled once, twice, and then [the SUV] ended up upside down,” Harrington said.
Breslow, a pharmacist who lives in Cooper City, said she didn’t realize what was happening. “All of a sudden I heard a boom. The car started flipped. It was like in slow motion. I was like, ‘oh my God. We’ve been hit.’ All I remember [is] we landed on our roof.”
Several people got out of their cars and rushed over. Inside, Harrington said, she heard Breslow “screaming ‘my baby, my baby,’ so we knew there was a child in there.”
Harrington said and a man who got to the overturned SUV at about the same time, and the two opened the back hatch. “He was a big guy. I told him I would crawl in.”
So Harrington maneuvered into the overturned car through the open hatch. “I could see the child’s legs dangling upside down in the child seat. I was able to, upside down laying on my back, I was unable to unhook him. As I unhooked him, he fell on me.”
Breslow said her son, Kevin Bergen, who turns 4 next month, weighs about 40 pounds. He came out without a scratch, she said.
Meanwhile, a man pulled Breslow out through the passenger sidewindow.

She should be called the “anti-Ted Kennedy”
Instead of running away from duty, she runs towards it!
