Schwarzenegger, Whitman sound alike politically
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/20/10 | Joe Garofoli, Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writers

With some of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's former top advisers on her payroll, it isn't surprising that Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman espouses many of the same policies he has - from tax cuts to stimulate the economy to promises to run California more like a business.

Those similarities are why one prominent California politician said electing Whitman would be the equivalent of another Schwarzenegger term. The politician who said that was Republican Rep. Tom McClintock of Elk Grove (Sacramento County), a Tea Party favorite who backed Whitman's primary rival, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner.

Shortly after taking office in 2004, Schwarzenegger promised - as Whitman repeatedly does - to find "waste, fraud and abuse" in state government. Two years later, Schwarzenegger admitted, "We did not find the kind of abuse that I thought there is."

"Their approaches are very similar, their rhetoric is very similar - and how did that work out for Schwarzenegger?" said A.G. Block, associate director of the UC Davis Institute of Governmental Affairs and the former editor of the nonpartisan California Journal.

Not well, it seems, given that just 23 percent of California voters approve of the way Schwarzenegger is doing his job, according to a September Field Poll, which also found that 81 percent of the respondents said California is on the wrong track.

Brown pairs them up

While fellow Republicans Schwarzenegger and Whitman bristle at comparisons to each other, they won't be able to dodge them much longer.

On Tuesday, Democrat Jerry Brown's campaign began a statewide TV ad that intersperses clips of Whitman and Schwarzenegger mouthing nearly identical talking points during their respective runs for governor. Even so, Schwarzenegger hasn't endorsed a gubernatorial candidate.

Hey, this is California (AKA Mexifornia ). Someone like Tom Mclintock, who is the REAL CONSERVATIVE, will find it almost impossible to win here.

Meg Whitman is probably the best of the bad lot we got.

Let Moonbeam win.

That will put the blame for their predicament where it really belongs.

On the DemonRATS.

Being punched in the face is preferable to getting hit over the head with a shovel.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find out that Governor Shriver buys his dresses from the same store as Meg Whitman. Hell they might even be hers that she donated to Him.

As another FReeper pointed out, at least Whitman isn’t married to a Kennedy.

Yes she deserves credit for not Willfully and Knowingly marrying into the Leadership of the Communist Party, which is what Governor Shriver did enthusiastically.

It has taken 5 years to change my wifes views from a Marxist to Conservative, she grew up down the street from Arnold in Austria, Austria is and has been for quite some time a MARXIST,SOCIALIST, Country. It was actually pretty easy to do, I made her start paying all the Bills every month including the check to Obama for Taxes.

Yeah, ads by the same people who sold us on pro "cap and trade" Fiorina as "conservative" because she's "pro-life," as if a Senator really makes that much difference in that regard when Obama is nominating the judges.

These women are "conservative" just like Bush was.

Jerry Brown sounds like a dream...

The terminally stupid always shot themselves in the foot and cry about it later.

Yep — that’s the ad.

What was your impression?

I only saw it AFTER having read about it, so I don’t think I was a good judge.

Let Moonbeam win.

Agreed.
As with Schwarzenegger, the danger in having a GOP governor is that it could potentially give cover to the tiny handful of Republicans the Democrats need to raise taxes. A Moonbeam governorship would keep the line in the sand very clear, and put the onus of the inevitable "cuts" entirely on the rats.

Meanwhile, Californians - - don't be "the last white farmer in Zimbabwe".
Flee now. Run, don't walk.
