Dinner bell follows class bell at some D.C. schools
Washington Post ^ | October 19, 2010 | Bill Turque

D.C. public schools have started serving an early dinner to an estimated 10,000 students, many of whom are now receiving three meals a day from the system as it expands efforts to curb childhood hunger and poor nutrition.

Free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch long have been staples in most urban school systems. But the District is going a step further in 99 of its 123 schools and reaching nearly a quarter of its total enrollment. Montgomery and Prince George's counties also offer a third meal of the day in some schools but not on the scale undertaken in the city.

The program, which will cost the school system about $5.7 million this year, comes at a time of heightened concern aboutchildhood poverty in the city. Census data show that the poverty rate among black children is 43 percent, up from 31 percent in 2007 and significantly higher than national rates.

All school meal programs are a disaster. (This was the subject of one of my early Rush calls.) It transforms schools into cafeterias in the eyes of some. (more than some) It also relieves a mother of her most natural instinct which is to feed her kids.

Unreal. Marxism is rearing it’s ugly head daily. This should help to destroy any family unit that may have existed prior. That’s the plan though!

It’s now the government’s job (local school district) to feed children? How will these children learn personal responsibility, if their parents are relieved of responsibility to feed them? Soon parents won’t have any responsibilities and the government can take over.

I wonder who's feeding the kids of some of these kids. Probably some other tax program.

I think I saw something here the other day: These guys take food stamps, buy bottled water, pour out the water in the parking lot, trade in the bottles, and use the cash refunds to buy beer.

Highly efficient use of tax dollars!

Well if they can’t educate them for $12K a head, maybe supplying 3 squares a day is something DC Public Schools could actually accomplish. Next union inspired public panic will be what are the students going to eat during weekends, holidays and summer?

I thought the idea of food stamps was to be able to feed your family. With unemployment at 10% (in reality probably higher) in DC, there are obviously a lot of unemployed parents, which I believe is just what Obama wants. The more dependent Americans are on the government, the better for Obama.

I also doubt that there is any reduction in the food stamps going to these families whose children are receiving 3 meals a day at school. So we are paying twice to feed the same children. And then we are told we are not doing enough.

Cop free meals at school all day, then go home and chow down on Popeye’s.

Poverty and hunger have about ZERO positive correlation in modern America.

The #1 nutrition related problem of the “poor” in America is OBESITY.

You are, in fact, more likely to be obese if you are “poor” than any other economic group.

Have you SEEN these kids in PG County MD? Many look like linebackers/Sumo wrestlers.
