Butterfield, Tea Party hold very different events
By Janet Conner-Knox | Times Staff Writer
While some Wilson residents will be holding an appreciation day for Congressman G.K. Butterfield at Pender and Nash streets, the Wilson County Tea Party will hold a rally at the Wilson County Library.
One of their topics is retiring Butterfield.
Both events are Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Butterfield said he is honored that his friends and constituents want to honor him and said the day will be filled with fun.
He isn't happy, however, with a flier some Wilson Tea Party members have been passing out.
The flier indicates they don't want Butterfield in Wilson and they certainly don't want him in Washington, according to Butterfield.
"I am disappointed they would have a rally around my retirement," Butterfield said Thursday night.
Butterfield said his family has been a part of the Wilson community for 150 years and for generations supported and worked in the Wilson community.
"I have spent my lifetime in service of the Wilson community," Butterfield said. "From a young person until now, I have served as a lawyer, a judge and now in the legislative branch of government."
Wilson Tea Party
Joel Killion, founder of the Wilson Tea Party, said the flier's statement doesn't mean they don't want Butterfield to live in Wilson.
"That has nothing to do with where he lives; it is where he governs," Killion said.
Killion said the purpose of the rally Saturday is to remind everyone what is important.
"We want Americans to get back to the principles we once had and live by those principles," Killion said.
Killion said the event is non-partisan and that the Wilson Tea Party is a very religious group.
"Jerry Grimes is a pastor and he will be there calling on all pastors to speak truth," Killion said. "Not to promote any particular candidate, party or personality, but just stand up for solid Christian values."
Killion said people who are registered in diverse political parties will be on hand.
But he said no Democratic candidate has accepted their invitation, not even from Democrat Party members in the Tea Party.
"The perception is we are Republican and anti-Democrat," Killion said. "That is simply not the case."
Butterfield
Butterfield said he is anxious to get past this election so he can begin working on the tax cuts that will end Dec. 31.
He faces Ashley Woolard, who is expected at the Tea Party rally.
Butterfield said both middle class and rich people got tax cuts under the Bush administration that will soon give out.
"Democrats want the tax cuts to stay permanently for the middle class and let the law expire for the rich," Butterfield said. "The middle class is struggling already. I think they need the tax break to continue."

Would you be so kind as to ping this thread to all on your NC list?...I’d really appreciate it!
OBX, I am praying Ashley can take this election...thanks for posting the link to his website!
turnout, turnout, turnout....and maybe some rain....just might surprise a few people...I was hoping to stir up some donation activity for AW.....this would be ONE sweet seat to win.......NC1 has had enough claytons, butterfields, and jailbirds....
Heard on 640AM this morning - who is that talk guy from Wilmington?
Anyway he was saying there was a Tea Party Rally at Holden Beach 11:00ish to 1:30ish on Saturday - 23rd. He said the Beach Mart - so I would take it that’s the Mainland side.
First 100 folks get an American Flag - and there will be a little Lemon-aid and B-B-Q.
Might want to re-ping for the Southeast State folks.
Thanks for the tip, I found the listing on Curtis Wright’s website and I’ll ping the list shortly.
