Although many California voters might not know it, the state could make history next month by electing Meg Whitman as its first woman governor.
The Republican candidate certainly hasn't made much of that fact in her speeches or paid ads, and neither has her Democratic rival Jerry Brown. In fact, gender had largely stayed out of this high-profile race, as Whitman and Brown tussled over creating jobs and tackling the state's multibillion-dollar budget deficits.
That all changed last week when a member of the Brown campaign a woman was overheard in a voice mail recording suggesting that his campaign call Whitman a "whore" for allegedly cutting pension deals to win police endorsements.
Whitman jumped in days later by directly addressing women voters in Tuesday's debate and describing what she said was their outrage over the word's use. Brown apologized for the slur.
"I think every Californian and especially women know exactly what's going on here," Whitman said. "And that is a deeply offensive term to women."

An article unusually subtle in it’s anti-Whitman slant. I guess the W-word kerfuffle had it’s effect. Hilarious how it both subtly calls Whitman a bad mom at the same time it praises her for avoiding Sarah Palin. Not to mention the supposedly unaffiliated voters it dredges up to malign her.
What ought to be played up by the Whitman campaign is the fact that Brown refused to give up the name of the slur-speaker.
FOX & Friends this morning absolutely refused to use the “W” word. That's what they kept saying as they reported on this...”the W word.” When did “whore” become a curse word and what is the appropriate term that can be voiced on the boob tube? Oops, I said “boob.” “Trollop” just doesn't have any ring to it.
Of course it was “low key”. Because there are scads of GOP women running. If there were a bunch of dem bimbos hags in competition, they’d proclaim it the Century of the Womyn!
Ha — the ‘w’ word. And we could have just a never-ending alphabetic list of PC words to avoid.
Good grief - calling politicians whores has been coin of the realm for a very long time - regardless of gender. This is a trumped up “slight” by a struggling campaign. If Whitman can’t close the deal after pumping in $140 million of her own money against Brown, she doesn’t deserve the office.
Glass-ceiling breaking gender “firsts” are reserved for Rat women.
You know what is interesting about all of that Meg Money. It doesn’t seem to be around much anymore. Commercials for Brown are swamping commercials for meg here in SoCal. I wonder what is going on.
