The Original Enviro-Nazis

One of the most embarrassing environmental facts of the 1930s was that between 60-70% of the German greens were Nazi Party members, compared to only 10% of the population at large. In fact, German greens even outperformed medical doctors and teachers, with Nazi foresters and veterinarians leading the charge. Somehow, the so-called independent German wandervogels (German word for ‘wandering free spirits') found themselves at the footstool of Der Fuhrer. Their wandervogel attitudes about civilization and the wild forestlands found a political niche in the isolationist biology of the Nazi Party. Furthermore, their strong beliefs in holism found a political voice in the totalitarian Social Darwinism of the Nazis, which was largely rooted in Ernst's Haeckel's ecology of the 1800s.

In those days, racism was good ‘scientific' biology. Racism (disguised as eugenics) was the rage of the late 1800s and early 1900s. It required the cataclysm of World War II to bring about an international repentance on the subject. In Germany, ethnicity and nature, racism and environmentalism, often went hand in hand. By the time of the Nazi period, this collaboration became hardened into a political-biological ecology known as "blood and soil."

The sixties fascists who were insisting that by wearing nearly identical bellbottoms and tee uniforms they were "doing their own thing", were actually just more little uniformed fascists falling in line for their masters. Now, no matter how often they proclaim their desire to protect the environment, they can't hide the fact that their real agenda is the same one fascists have always had and it's not a bit concerned with the environment as anything other than a means to an end. Whether it's professors from the "beat generation" disguising and rephrasing fascist eugenics goals or current day "progressives" trying to hide their agenda in "global" issues, they're always the same.

Looks like there’s a hideous virus that infects the ignorant and easily swayed in each generationm with the same old fascist disease. What that virus might be and where it originated is left as an exercise for the reader.

Nowadays I look at people who sport around in 'The North Face' apparel as the new environ-weenies...Every time I see that logo I just cringe.
I need to buy one of these - just because...

Gosh, that's too much of a coincidence.

Leni Riefenstahl had a film career consisting mostly of great-outdoors roles -- climbing mountains, body beautiful, that kind of thing. And AFAIC, she was beautiful. Too bad about the whole "Triumph of the Will" gig; the lesbian actress Jodi Foster was trying to drum up interest in a biopic (she would have starred) about LR, shortly before or just after LR's death (she was in her 90s when she died I think). Not much interest. It would have been difficult -- the filming of "Olympiad" broke a lot of new ground, and cost a fortune (the Third Reich paid for it) to make; TotWill was similarly expensive. Imagine trying to cut corners simulating those productions in a longish drama that few would ever go to see. Thanks Rashputin.
