European Sources: Hof to Reassure Syria, Lebanon Their Role in Peace Process 'Definitely Coming'

Frederic Hof, an aide to U.S. Special Middle East Peace Envoy George Mitchell, is due to arrive in Damascus Wednesday evening on the first leg of a Middle Eastern tour that aims to explore the prospects of reviving the peace process in the Middle East. Hof is scheduled to meet Thursday with a number of Syrian officials, topped by Foreign Minister Walid Muallem and Vice President Farouq al-Sharaa. European diplomatic sources have told the Italian news agency AKI that Hof's visit, in addition to the recent visit by Mitchell to Damascus and Muallem's meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in New York, are "anticipatory, early hints that carry reassurances for Damascus and Beirut that their role in the peace process is definitely coming," as soon as Washington manages to put the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks on the right track. "Maybe it was also an attempt to push Syria and Lebanon toward backing the efforts (of reviving) the (current) round of Palestinian-Israeli direct negotiations, as long as its success will allow Washington to achieve further progress" on the Syrian-Israeli and Lebanese-Israeli peace tracks, the sources added.
