Obama's Rolling Stone Interview Proves He's Out of Touch
U.S. News & World Report ^ | October 8, 2010 | Mary Kate Cary

Have you seen the interview with President Obama in the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine? In it, President Obama proves why he’s one of the most polarizing figures in politics today, and how deep his disconnect is with voters.

For example, rather than trying to woo members of the Tea Party movement heading into the midterms, he says that “their anger is misdirected” and claims they are funded by “some very traditional, very powerful, special interest lobbies,” implying that they are confused and manipulated--rather than taxpayers with valid concerns about spending. Asked about Fox News, he points out that although he swore to uphold the Constitution’s provision for a free press, that Fox News is “ultimately destructive for the long-term growth of a country that has a vibrant middle class and is competitive in the world.” Does he realize how many middle class voters watch Fox News?

[See an Opinion slide show of 7 ways Obama can become “one of us.”]

Here’s the beginning of a long answer on how he thinks the left views him:

When I talk to Democrats around the country, I tell them, “Guys, wake up here.”

... I came in and had to prevent a Great Depression, restore the financial system so that it functions, and manage two wars. In the midst of all that, I ended one of those wars, at least in terms of combat operations. We passed historic healthcare legislation, historic financial regulatory reform and a huge number of legislative victories that people don't even notice. We wrestled away billions of dollars of profit that were going to the banks and middlemen through the student-loan program, and now we have tens of billions of dollars that are going directly to students to help them pay for college. We expanded national service more than we ever have before ...

This answer goes on and on, listing all his accomplishments, including “reinvigorating” the Middle East peace process, “resetting” relations with Russia, and “changing world opinion” on human rights. He later goes on to give long answers about financial regulation, the war in Afghanistan, and climate change, with a shorter mention of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” He calls his “the most successful administration in a generation in moving progressive agendas forward.”

Really not much straight discussion about the economy or jobs or reining in the deficit, except to hit Republicans for gridlock and tax cuts for “the wealthiest Americans.” No mention of independent voters.

[See a roundup of editorial cartoons about Barack Obama.]

What is most startling is how the interview ends--the president, “repeatedly stabbing the air with his finger,” calls Democrats who sit out the midterms “inexcusable” and “irresponsible.” “People need to buck up” and “stop sitting on their hands,” he says to his supporters. Continuing on this theme later this week, he told a crowd at a Democratic campaign event to “stop sulking.” Gone are the days of “Yes We Can.” It’s become “You Better Not.” In other words, the beatings will continue until morale improves.

Meanwhile, the jobs numbers are out today showing unemployment stuck at 9.6 percent, and the Labor Department this week announced that middle class spending had its steepest one-year drop since records began. Taxes and healthcare costs are rising and incomes are not, so families are spending less on clothing and restaurant meals. Middle  class Americans are cutting discretionary spending left and right, trying to make ends meet, while jobs keep disappearing--and our president continues his march to the left leading “the most successful administration in a generation in moving progressive agendas forward.”

How could a man who was such a galvanizing figure for many Americans two years ago have become this out of touch?

Narcissists, by their very nature, have a tenuous grasp on reality. If they were realistic, they would learn the awful truth about themselves.

And when confronted with unpleasant information, their reaction is: reject the data and attack its source.

Obama isn't just out of touch with the voters...it runs much, much deeper than that.

Simply put, he was out of touch two years ago but
he “seemed so nice”, as my 87 year old mother put it.
Even today, she can’t bring herself to dislike him even
though she understands that his policies are destroying
the country.

and a hypocritical one....

even if his BS about the funding of the Tea Party was true, that's not okay for the libs...the fact that groups such as Moveon.org is funded to the tunes of millions of $$$ by far out leftists like financial terrorist George $oro$ and others, who in turned funded obama- well that's okay....

this is a narrative the Tea Party constantly misses on- the hypocrisy of rat-wingers who call us racist and funded by “blah-blah-blah” while they embraced the funding and support of anti-semites at moveon.org and numerous netroots hate groups...

More importantly, does he realize what an idiot he sounds like?

As far as Obama is concerned Chicago is representative of the whole nation. He does not know America and can’t understand Americans.

Become this out of touch?

He was never in touch with anyone, and most people were not in touch with him. Just words and hyperbole.

Now most people are in touch with him and nobody likes him.

he says that “[Tea Partiers'] anger is misdirected” and claims they are funded by “some very traditional, very powerful, special interest lobbies,” implying that they are confused and manipulated--rather than taxpayers with valid concerns about spending.

In my experience this is how leftoids think. Anyone who disagrees with them is dumb, confused, or manipulated and doesnt know what is good for himself and his family.

That always seems to work for Bill Clinton.

Obama isn’t an idiot and he isn’t out of touch. He is doing what he set out to do, destroy the Republic against the will of the people.

He might as well have said....” I agree with the first ammendment as long as everybody in the media that is talking, agrees with my position or understands that ultimately my position will be the one that the country goes with, so any deviation form that is ultimately destructive for the long-term growth of my ambition,... ah I meant long-term growth of the country..”.....

He’s outta touch because it ain’t happenin’ to him and his family. No sir, he doesn’t have to look to punks like Rezko anymore; Soros is writing the checks. The “overseas” sales of his children’s book soon to be published are going to come in just enough to keep his income around that $4-5 m mark where he and the Mrs. can be comfortable.

"Manipulated," meaning they listen to Rush, Beck, or Hannity whether they do or not.

Evidently not, and that gives me hope. The supposed brilliance of the one is nothing more than a carefully crafted and guarded myth. That much has become clear over the past 2 years. Clinton as much as I loathed him was a very smart guy and able politician who was capable of changing his style to maintain grip. I’m convinced this guy is not only dim, but he really doesn’t understand the American psyche. The more people hear him the more they realize he just isn’t one of us. Something isn’t quite right even for Americans who don’t really pay any attention to politics.

This guy is going to continue to implode, hopefully between now and 2012 we can use that to regain control of Washington.

He never accomplished anything in his entire life. Never had an original thought, no sense of loyalty or love for America. He’s the poster boy for affirmative action, an arrogant windbag, a baldfaced liar who knows which side his bread is buttered on and who held the butter knife... (Saudi Arabia). Hence the elaborate bow to S.A.’s king. He’s rotten to the core.
