In the movie "Watchmen" this plot element was changed.

I have the original comic release preserved. I wonder how much it is worth?

Seriously though, this is a brilliant and recurring theme.

Outer Limits had an episode involving a fake alien invasion.

"The Architects of Fear".

Another foreshadowing of a likely (near) future.


Frowning takes 68 muscles.

Ah... nice concept.

Reality, though, I believe, will be the opposite.
The anti-Christ that “solves the world’s problems” will arrive as an “extraterrestrial”, and people will accept him as a savior of the world.

For the better, I thought. It just wouldn't have worked in the movie.
