The great graphic novel "Watchmen" featured a fake extraterrestrial attack as a ploy to bring everyone on earth together as a united front. It was an effort to end struggles between people, because we all had a common enemy.
In the movie "Watchmen" this plot element was changed.

Not extraterrestrial. Inter-dimensional.

Seriously though, this is a brilliant and recurring theme.
Outer Limits had an episode involving a fake alien invasion.
"The Architects of Fear".
Another foreshadowing of a likely (near) future.
Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Ah... nice concept.
Reality, though, I believe, will be the opposite.
The anti-Christ that “solves the world’s problems” will arrive as an “extraterrestrial”, and people will accept him as a savior of the world.

In the movie "Watchmen" this plot element was changed. For the better, I thought. It just wouldn't have worked in the movie.
