Florida man fights to stop pre-game prayers at Pee Wee football league

.- A Florida man has asked a city council to end a Pee Wee football game’s pregame prayer tradition, claiming that the four-year-old custom violates his and his son’s First Amendment rights because the games are played on public land.

On Monday Louie Fromm, an assistant coach for the Holmes County Pee Wee Football Association, formally asked the Vernon, Florida City Council to end the practice, Fox News reports.

League officials say they are a private organization that takes no government money and so the city council has no right to demand an end to the prayer. Fromm contends that because the field on which the football games are played is public property, the city must order the prayers to stop.

City officials are waiting on the city attorney’s opinion before taking action.

The 400-player league’s president Debbie Gunter has said a petition with nearly 500 signatures has been circulating in support of continuing the prayer.

Gunter told Fox News that the association has been saying prayers for four years and Fromm “started complaining last year.”

"He has a problem with prayer, but while I don't have a problem with his non-beliefs, he shouldn't have a problem with ours."

She said the two-minute prayer stresses good sportsmanship and faith.

Fromm has said his son has been the target of isolation and ridicule from other players because he does not participate in the prayer. Trying to counter the idea the change would “appease a single upset individual,” he told the city council that they had been “grossly misinformed and blinded by a small group of religious fundamentalists.”

According to Fox News, he claimed that the right to religious freedom was endangered by others and had “already been hijacked by that very same group.”

A nice response to this jerk would be for the team to publicly pray for his soul. That would really piss him off.

I think it’s about effin’ time we start taking these folks out ‘behind the bleachers’. I’m tired. I’m REALLY tired. It’s time to defend. Enough. They feel empowered by the trail lawyers. That’s all this is.

I’d ask to see his wallet, then start ripping up any dollar bills he had inside. If he objects to prayer he certainly would have a problem with “In God We Trust” and therefore shouldn’t object to ridding his wallet of all religious statements.

I live in Holmes County. There is no way this guy is going to win plus the law is not on his side either.

Does anyone remember the film, “Vernon Florida” A couple of my relatives were in it.

What makes this guy think his son’s rights are any more important than everyone else’s sons that want the prayer? I don’t mean it should be majority rules, it should be every man (boy) for himself. Pray, don’t pray, your choice. That’s called liberty. The moment you start telling me I can’t pray, that’s tyranny.

They can tell him that he’s free to start his own Atheist Youth Football League.

If they are truly athiest, the prayer should not bother them. They KNOW it is a waste of time. If however, the prayers bother them, maybe it is conviction tugging at their hearts.

I agree with a public prayer for the father and his son. Who knows, it might change their lives.

Why does the league allow him to coach? As a former youth hockey coach of 30 years, all coaches had to be approved and appointed by a board, annually. They could reject any applicant for any or no reason.

I sure wouldn’t want any child of mine to be coached by this man. Parents should file suit against him for violating THEIR First Amendment rights are being violated by his belief system.

Sounds like a great way to get your kid in a world of hurt with the other kids in the league.
Ya don’t think after the parents talk about this that the kids aren’t aching to take a shot at this a-holes little billy?
